Hello M.Wang and welcome to the forum!

There's a thread about Lighthouse (and Bird) in the Trick Archive - have a look here:

http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,215.0.html

My advice - read this, then practice lots - worked for me!

P.S. -

Once you've done this then check out the other tricks in the archive here - http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1082.0.html

I'd also recommend getting hold of the excellent kendama books produced by Void and donald grant -

'Spike!' is the first one to start with - http://www.kendama.co.uk/books.html

I can't seem to land a lighthouse. Every time I attempt one the ken flips off, any help?

Hi Raideon,

Lighthouse is tricky. Out of the Essential 11 beginners tricks it's arguably the hardest, but in my view the most satisfying when you finally get it, which you will if you keep practicing. This is the key. No shortcuts here!

Having said that, you can learn a lot from hearing other peoples experience of learning and make your practice sessions more valuable.

Have a look in this thread taken from the trick archive, plenty of good advice and opinions on Lighthouse - http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,215.0.html

Searching the forum for the word Lighthouse also brings up other results that could help you.

For the record, no trick I've ever learnt took me longer to get than Lighthouse. Usually tricks around my level I can start getting in an hour or so and tricks beyond my level I can see progress in a day of trying but when I started out, I landed all the other tricks in the essential 11 in under an hour or so of trying each one, but with Lighthouse, it took me two months of daily practice to get my first one!

From speaking to others, I do think this is an abnormally long time to get it, but it just didn't click with me - we all have our particular tricks that we struggle to learn. I now consider Lighthouse to be pretty easy as it goes, not really any harder than a Spike. This comes from practice, just don't give up and you'll get there!

I should also just tell you that my brother who has no interest in kendama, picked mine up and landed a Lighthouse on his first ever attempt - so it can be done quickly too!

Stick with it, it's a great trick and a gateway to a whole world of fun.

Lighthouse is honestly a lot of practice. Make sure you have a quality kendama too, otherwise the ball might honestly be really slippery. Still possible but so much harder.

when trying to balance anything, the smaller it is; the harder it is.

eg try balancing a broom compared to a teaspoon, either way the key is to LOCK your vision on the topmost point and don't you dare blink.

I was allright at balancing a juggling club before dama but that hardly prepared me at all, I still I only just feel like my lighthouses are kinda solid enough now to start learning LH flips and instas (7 months after first trying lighthouse!)

The thing that helped me the most was getting the pull-up right; so the ken gets as close to perfectly vertical exactly at the peak of its jump (the weightless moment)

using a beat up natty compared to a slick hardcoat will help alot too ;)
