Title: 1st Irish Kendama Open (March 21st, 2015)

The 1st IKO will happen on March 21st, during the Dublin circus festival.

Official post: http://kendama-ireland.org/irish-kendama-open-2015/ (http://kendama-ireland.org/irish-kendama-open-2015/)

Allowed Kendamas: Any competition size kendama in "reasonable shape".

Beginners division and an advanced division with some exotic tricks, but maybe not as exotic as the BKO.

The venue is the same as the Dublin Circus Festival which is the Gym of the Larkin Community College (http://"https://www.google.com/maps/place/Larkin+Community+College+(CDVEC)/@53.352187,-6.257197,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xea720131d21578ab?hl=en").

Time slot will be 11:00, but we all know how lousy schedules are on juggling conventions.

Beginners list is up (same as  BKO)

Ladder, 6 misses allowed

Pretty cheap day ticket flight from Bristol right now. Seriously considering it.

Do you know the venue? I'm looking at travel plans (to/from airport), and their website is broken, with no venue listed on their FB page. :-/

I don't know the venue. I'll ask them, maybe they don't have it confirmed yet.

Last DCF I attended was on a Gym nearby O'Connell St, so it was quite centric.

About the time, I asked them to have some "space" (there will be no stage, so it will be just a table and a few chairs) around lunchtime (that is, around 13:00) So far it looks like that will be the time, but still is not confirmed. As soon as I have anything else confirmed, I'll update the post.

Ooh.
"Secret grip pull up - flip spike"
Flip Spike = Pivot the secret grip so that the spike points upwards (in a sort of penguin position), and spike it?
Or some kind of throw/whirlwind?

The spike always points upwards, the spin is to make the ken go to the back of the hand without releasing it. However, I am editing the video now :)

That trick was inspired by one happygoat used in a game of ken :)

Hmmm, I shall have a crack at all those today. I'll need to work on that Pinwheel one, I think.

BTW, on the last trick you said "Sara grip or Reverse Sara grip". I assume that should read "tama grip..."?

You're right. In my defense I'll say that I finished editing it quite late yesterday.

For the Pivot Spike, can the string be facing into the palm at the beginning, or must it be on the outside, as in the video?

Either way is fine. I find it easier with the string outside.

It's just that I have taken a personal dislike to one of the tricks. 'Cos I'm not getting on well with it.

I always forget David nickname in the forum :)

Royal Kendama is a sponsor!

And Kendama Europe is also a sponsor!

The prize pool is starting to look awesome.

Unrelated: @Void, how long since you participated on a Kendama event as competitor? I guess in Japan past year, right? What about participating in a Kendama event in Europe? I'm guessing 2009 ;-)
Title: Re: 1st Irish Kendama Open (March 21st, 2015)
Post by: The Void on 22 January, 2015, 17:53:50
I did not compete in Japan in 2014 (no comps happening while I was there), but did in 2012.
In 2012 I competed in the BKO, where I realised that my head was too full of organising thoughts to be able to do both that and compete. I just couldn't concentrate onstage. (Excuses.. ;) )
In late 2013 I competed in LXG in Leicester. I came 2nd. Outside of UK, I suppose it was the Getdown in Copenhagen, Dec 2012. I came 3rd.
I've never competed in the EKO - I've always been running it.
So, 15 months by the time IKO comes around. Rusty.

I am looking forward to a showdown Void, it has been a while!... (That is if I make it past the first round, these tricks are a tad taxing!)

Shalafi - Is it BKA/JKA approved kendamas only? Or comp sized in the only important thing?
I am mid-recruiting a couple of others (including potentially my sister and her boyfriend who may be visiting the weekend), so want to make sure they have the right gear, unless it'll be a more relaxed affair?
Title: Re: 1st Irish Kendama Open (March 21st, 2015)

About the kendama, I'm quite open to allow people play, so in principle BKA approved + a few extra exceptions, like the one they sell on Tiger, and of course, competition size.

I won't allow stick paint finishing, like the Sweets aTack, Krom Rubber or Play Pro Grip. If you have such a kendama, I'm sure you have another one as well that qualifies.

I won't allow things like Mugen mushou, I think that is unfair.

I won't be strict about having to be your own kendama, if you borrowed one for the day, that's fine with me. I may even bring some with me.

All in all, I want to encourage people to play, so I *may* allow any kendama on the beginners ladder. The restrictions are meant for advanced players not getting an extra edge.

Edit: I considered that this is not very precise and potentially confusing, so we are going for competition size.

Actually, I've rethought this and decided to just go for "Competition size" so, bring whatever kendama you want.

I know, they just told me now, I always asked for the 13:00 slot, but somehow they thought it was planned for Sunday.

Don't worry, we won't start without you or Matt (or anyone that has confirmed they come). I will try to run a Kendama workshop at 11:00 so we can start later.

Ah that's an early start, should get there near the start hopefully! (3 hour bus ride is the only potential delaying obstacle).
Have you had much interest in/near Dublin? It is just me and emma coming across from the west coast,  a new weekend job has snared the one additional recruit I convinced unfortunately.
Should be a good craic anyway!

I just watched the trick video again. Clarifications, please!...

-Mini-Spacewalk
I just realise I've been practising with a "held tama" start, releasing into a backswing before entering the MS. Is that allowed? Or should I switch to the free-hanging tama start as you do in the video?

-Whirlwind big cup - Fast Hand Aeroplane
In the video, after the Whirlwind BC, you "release" two fingers before going into the FH move. (It's slightly hidden by the title.) How strict are you going to be about minor grip changes like this?

-Fast Hand Spike
"tama grip or reverse tama grip". Fine. But I assume "the hole must be pointing upwards to begin with"?

Of course, whatever you decide is totally fine, I just want to be clear.
Thanks!

I'm on my phone so, quick reply.

Free hanging tama for the mini-spacewalk

Allowed grip adjustment for whirlwind -> fast hand aeroplane.

Hole facing up for the fast hand spike.

Since it's very likely that only you and Matt enter advanced, I'd like to know if you're willing to play with all the tricks (for more fun and variety) or just the ones for the final (strict ruling).

Thanks for the answers. Understood.

All tricks? Fine by me.
Is it "first to 5 points", btw? I don't think that was stated anywhere.
Title: Re: 1st Irish Kendama Open (March 21st, 2015)
Post by: shalafi on 16 March, 2015, 11:28:19
In the official page it says:

"In the final, the first to 3 points will be the winner."

While that is fine in competitions with a lot of rounds, I believe with just 2 players, one game for 3 points will be too short.

I think 5 points with all the tricks is better, if you both agree.

We are doing this for fun, changing the rules to improve the enjoyment even if it is less than a week to go is fine with me (if everyone agrees).

IKO 2015

A kendama competition "near" me that I don't have to run? Yes please!
Up at 5:45, lift to the airport (thanks, lovely girlfriend!), an uneventful Ryanair flight (phew, they didn't check my rucksack was 1 or 2 cm too thick for their restrictions), and a bus ride into the centre. Peering at my printed map as I wandered towards the venue, I suddenly saw two people waving at me across the street. Ah, Matt and Emma have made it here too! Walking around the block unnecessarily (turns out I can't map read) we encountered a bizarre pile-a-load-of-junk-on-the-pavement "market", but then found our venue... with a locked door, and no-one about. Confusing. Then Raul & Mercedes arrived, and we all eventually found the side-door into the gym. We're in! A reasonable sized gym, but pretty quiet at this point. I guess 11 am was early for everyone.

We had a little game of KEN to warm up, then a beginners workshop. Nice to meet @KenDogma too, who completed the list of 7 people who came "for" the IKO. In all, there were 9 in the Beginners division, and 2 in Advanced. Unfortunately @sunnyD had some last-minute business to attend to, so couldn't make it along. Missed you, David!

Beginners made a decent showing, with people who'd only just learned to play joining in keenly. Good work from Emma and Gareth at the top. Matt and I faced off in Advanced, and the short story is that he won. I'll let the video (currently transferring it to you, Raul!) tell the longer story.

I have to be honest, and say I was quite gutted not to win. I'd been practising a fair bit, and thought I had a pretty good opportunity to tuck another title under my belt. I was annoyed at some of my misses.... but I'm sure Matt could say the same. So, ultimately, Matt rocks, beat me good and proper, and I take my hat off to him. In direct head-to-heads between the two of us in "proper" competitions, that makes it 1-1. After a wait of almost 5 years, you've got even, Matt. He's also the first Brit to beat me in competition. :-)

After prizes were handed out (#SponsorsRock Thanks Krom, for my mahogany Viking!) there was a lull, and Raul took the chance to have another crack at a Dan grading, with D2 in his sights. His moshis were already in the bank. So on to the compulsories. A reasonably solid start, with a few misses here and there, but only 3 Fallings meant that he could only potentially make 1st Dan. Which he did, I'm very pleased to say! Well done, mate!

Then it was a move to outside, in the sun on the astroturf-in-rubber pitch. A nice mellow few hours playing, KENning, filming a few video clips and chatting. A couple of newbies got curious and had a go. Stickers were spread around.

Our time at the venue came to an end, so we (down to 5 of us now) went for a walk to St Stephen's park, to chill in the last of the afternoon sunlight. Again, we had some curious passers-by coming up to ask what that funny thing was, and could they have a go. After a while, the chilling out actually became chilly, so we went for a nice sit down (Matt & Emma had also been up very early, so we were all pretty tired by now) and a hot chocolate. Then we went our separate ways.

Thank you very much Raul, for making it happen. A smallish, but successful "opening bid" in the IKO stakes. Here's a raised glass... To the next one?

It's a great pleasure to organize something and having people get in and enjoy it.

I'm very happy with the outcome of the IKO, in attendance and fun. It's very likely that we'll have a 2nd IKO. Maybe another meetup later on this year. We'll see.

While compiling the video I noticed that There are only 2 times when both The Void and Matt miss, the rest of the no-points are all hits. Specially at the end, The Void had the title in his hands with a Diving Top. Quite intense.

5 points for Matt, 4 point for The Void, 4 tricks with no points scored and 3 tricks not played.

I had some doubts on one Diving top from Matt, after seeing it in video it was a clear hit.

Just watched
Nice compilation of the begginers division always good to see begginers hit some of the harder tricks in the list

Advanced final was very intense indeed. Void almost had it in the Diving Top round, but then came along the evil force known as... Pressure! Then when I saw that the last trick was BOTV I said to myself 'Is it going to end this way again[1]' and it did.

Well done guys!

Hey @shalafi , just tried to find info on DCF 2016 - nothing. Do you know if it's happening, or if you're planning an IKO for next year?

The Dublin Circus Festival is organised by a students club, so it's never announced early.

Also, it's always one weekend before St. Patrick's day, so they don't feel like they need announcing it.

I haven't talked to them, but it is my intention to do the 2nd IKO the same way as I did the first one, as long as there are players interested

Bah, Ryanair have changed their flight schedules, so I can't do a day trip this time. :/

Mmm, looking at the dates of past year, it seems I was wrong and it is the weekend AFTER St Patricks. So probably March 19th

Who would be coming? @The Void @kendamatty @KenDogma ? I am afraid this year we will have less people... I haven't been advocating kendama for a while, I'm seriously lacking spare time.

Well, given the initial push, I have drafted a list of 20 tricks from which I would do the Advanced division and I contacted the organizers of the DCF.

Hopefully more info soon.

It seems that that is a more expensive weekend for flights. So it currently looks unlikely that I would make it across this time, sorry. :-/
