As always @The Void will be present to do some gradings.
Want to test you metal? We highly suggest going for it.

Extras:
We will set up some stalls for people to have the option of buying merchandise such as apparel in addition to kendamas (perhaps even customs).
Expect to see some interesting things popping up so keep your eyes peeled.
Refreshments will be available at the venue.

We hope to see you there and best of luck with all the prep.

Much love,
Maico and the rest of the ARKFam

So many questions!

In a world of slaydawgs and Sweets primes with their training cups :P What will be the restrictions kendama wise?

Hehehe Just keep your eyes peeled for updates on the top thread.
A little change up perhaps is expected but its a familiar format from last years.

@Maicodama
Last year I released the tricks 3 months before the BKO, which was the shortest amount of time ever since BKOs began, and I felt bad about it. It's now 2 months and 4 days until this year's BKO. I know I've walked away from organising it, and you can do what you like as the new organiser, but I just want to say, as a player, I take the BKO seriously, and that if I don't get enough time to practice, then I won't be entering, because I don't want to do it half arsed. I know everyone's in the same boat, but that's how I feel personally.

So I really hope to see the divisions and trick lists announced this weekend.
Cheers, Void.

Hey Guys!

Deepest apologies for taking my sweet time on this. It is my first time after all.
You'll be glad to hear that the tricklists will be released tomorrow along with some extra tit bits. Kofi and I just finished the last part of the announcement vid this afternoon so it will most definitely be tomorrow.

I appreciate that people need enough time to practice. There isn't as many tricks as there were last year for the divisions and there are a few new changes also which mostly caused the delay. In addition, more sponsors have been added so we have a big pot this year to make up for the delay.

Much love as always from the rest of the ARKFam,
Maico

Details of the freestyle comp?
Slaydogs & Sweets Prime are both larger than competition size, aren't they? Well, that's me out then. Cheers.

Beginners:
That trick is Flying Top, not Spinning Top. Spinning Top is a different trick. I believe there are books available with trick names in...

Really?
They've used these at KWC
Primes are comp ready as well.
Apologies on the trick names :P
Title: Re: British Kendama Open 2017
Post by: The Void on 11 March, 2017, 20:23:49
Bigger kendamas are easier to use. I've always thought it daft to allow different sized kendamas in a comp, so I never have. (Except where this is taken into account in the judging). I don't want to enter a comp where my opponent can gain an advantage by their choice of prop. So I won't.
Your comp, your rules - fine. I'll be at the back of the hall, doing grading exams. :)

May I suggest adding the tricklist names as text to the first post?
Quote from: Maicodama on 09 February, 2017, 15:52:26Freestyle:
For the first time freestyle is available for anyone to enter.
Not true. There have been either Best Trick or 7ToSpike freestyle divisions every year so far, which were open to everyone to enter. Please change that to "timed freestyle" to make it factually correct. Thanks.

Looking forward to seeing everyone down in Exeter.

Ha Ha about time!!

Looking forward to this.

Thinking Id probably stand the best chance in intermediate, but most of advanced is doable if I ride my luck like last year ;D

@Maicodama I guess mixed dams are also fine ie. I have an RWB Classic with Sweets arctic cushion tama? Although I may go full JKA on yo asses! ::)

I also have to agree with Void on the sizes, even slightly bigger is easier - I've been hitting some tricks on my musou for years but only now am hitting them on standard sizes, and a musou is smaller than a Slaydawg.
I still want to enter, I just think that even a smaller size up can give a player an unreasonable advantage
Title: Re: British Kendama Open 2017
Post by: shalafi on 12 March, 2017, 14:27:29
Just a note, the video is kind of confusing because the person doing the trick sometimes does some extra after. For a competition instructional video the tricks sound be perform as expected on the comp.

The trick videos is just to show how the trick can be done (the trick is also named below). We don't really like the rigidness of it all so there we are. Basically just bringing to life the tricks that are on the list. @shalafi

I know, we just have different points of view on what a video for a trick list should look like, which is fine, after all this is a "discussion" forum.

Don't be fooled by the name, the XL is a Japanese clothing brand (or something) and it is just a custom tama on a standard sized ken
Sticky paint on an Ozora though is still a good combo :)

Just to say hope everyone has a great weekend!  Sorry I won't be down there for it this year: just got back from Berlin, and Exeter is a bit too far from my wee nest up here in the Scottish wilderness :)
On a side note, it'll be interesting to see how the decision to allow outsized kendamas affects things.  Personally, I'm not in favour, but in these days of magnetic paint and using ten-finger strings for juggles, I guess we'll see if this is the way to go....
Look forward to seeing the results, will try to make it for the next one for sure!

I had fun at the BKO weekend. :)

Firstly, a BIG THANK YOU to @Maicodama @Kofi @BenPycroft24 and all ARK-ers for making the BKO happen again this year! People came, played kendama, had fun, met new friends, and that's ultimately all that counts.

Okay, there were quite a few organisational issues... I won't go on about that here - details to be worked on, and discussed behind the scenes at a later date, when the dust has settled. :-)

Back to positives...
It was great to see lots of people at their first BKO. Nice to meet you, @johndmc , @rhys_goes_peace , Oakley, Tom, Ben, Jack, John, John, @Oblivion , Ryan, Brandon, Lisa, Julia, Marcus, & Mike! (Did I miss anyone? Probably! Sorry if so.) And great to see all this lot again: @mreasyguy @Dimensions @fiddletriks @JakeHookins Rolf, @Its_mrdiz , Dice, Nathan,  @Cortz @kymallen94 @Cand1ez @BenBenVx @KenSan ... and anyone I missed!

Spare a moment and post a word or two here on your BKO, dudes! Even if it's just a simple "thank you" to the orgs - that means a lot. (And join the forum (http://kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=register) to do so, if you haven't yet. Everyone's welcome!)

Anyone else got pics or clips to share?

Other good stuff
- Teaching kendama to people passing by, who glanced over with a curious expression. "Err, sorry... what are you guys doing?" :)
- Seeing Royal-wielders do well in comps and gradings. (Royals rock. Have I mentioned this? I don't think I say it enough. Go Rock a Royal. :) )
- Rhys being a little kendama demon in person as well as on the web.
- ...and his brothers' enthusiasm and excitement at watching him do well.
- I was outside, so missed it, but heard that Rhys beat Ben A. in the KEN game. Later on, I heard that actually, Ben had won, but had very graciously stepped aside to allow Rhys to compete in his first freestyle comp. You're a gent, Ben. Hats off to you for that.
- Julia and Adam's "Axe-off".
- Not having all the pressure on my shoulders.
- People coming from abroad to attend a BKO - always awesome behaviour!
- Sponsors rocking.
- A little bit of wheeling-and-dealing in the car on the way home.... (I'll tell you later...)
- Cortz's amusement at the fact that I bring packed lunches. :-)
- Dice asking me if I had a really beaten-up tama to show in his photo-project, when I'd given away my most banged Royal to the talented Austrian lad we met the evening before. Timing.
- Oakley being a bit freaked out that I knew his surname.
- That time when someone said something funny, and we all laughed. I liked that one.

Big clicks to you all!

I would like to thank all of the ark fam for a great weekend. It's been an absolute blast and I can't wait to make to another event.
It was indeed great to finally meet some of the forum members at last, and also some other new people. A truly great bunch of people.
Void thanks for the tips on the hanging lighthouse, it was a moment of 'oh I see what you mean, so you do it like this... *lands one*'

I landed a few tricks for the first time over the weekend, and I'm still chasing my first whirlwind though. It will be mine.

Had a great time down in Exeter with the ARK boys, Kromies and every one else in attendance! Seeing the young shreder @rhys_goes_peace going toe to toe with Rolf was a definite highlight for me  8)>

All in all I think @Maicodama @BenPycroft24 @Kofi did a amazing job considering the shoes( @The Void ) they were having to fill. Also Having Rolf who is larger than life and a veteran of so many competitions around the world there too must have only added to the pressure.

Keep it up guys and hopefully it can only get better!
