#bko2015
Awesome!! Not that far for me to travel. I'll try my best to be there!
May, that's earlier than expected, but looks good.
Also London is really centric to get by plane from almost everywhere, which is excellent.
I've hopefully convinced a couple more people to go along to it :)
Are there any fee's for bko? Or do we just need to pay for gradings?
I'll be there!
Probably see you there then rob!
More details next week, Ben. All will be revealed.
Somehow I read EKO instead of BKO... still, I'd do my best to attend it.
If I can get time off work I'm there for sure though! I'll keep my eyes open for more information!
Updates: http://www.kendama.co.uk/bko (http://www.kendama.co.uk/bko)
Advanced division list will be announced by early December.
If I manage to make it to the BKO, I wouldn't mind being a judge on the Dan Jam. I fount it very entertaining.
Great, thanks, shalafi!
I'm not sure on which division I should enter beginner or intermediate. I feel I'm pretty competent with all the tricks listed in each category. Any advice?
Well, don't forget that there is the added time factor pressure with Intermediate.
But then again, you have quite a long time to decide....
A long time to practice intermediate ladder as well. I'll practice when I can. And probably when I get my natty tk :)
was hoping it was in london! just landed myself a full time job so attending this event shouldnt be a problem:)
Will definitely be there!
Hooray! (And congrats, Kris.)
I know I said the same thing last year, but I'm gonna try and get there! Eurostar fares for May are coming up next month, so I will start looking then. I'll start stalking my cousin in London for a place to stay :) Let's hope I get some other players along for the ride.
Thanks for doing it in London, giving us foreigners a better chance to reach it!
Hope you can make it, Hans. It would be good to have some overseas representation again!
Early May sounds good, glad I've got a lot of time in advance to save for this one. I'll do my best, would be great to see those faces from the EKO again.
I hope you can make it. Last year was really excellent fun. 48 hours of kendama play with so many nice people = ace.
I will be there! Plenty of time to get some practice in...
Wow, sorry I haven't posted in forever. Just realised how long it's been.
I would love to go. I'm hoping to take a big trip somewhere next year, but if I can work it out I'll be at the BKO! I'd love to do gradings and be a judge again. Tentatively practising my moshi kame for my 2nd Dan. 3rd is pushing with my arms the way they are! Also working on Edit 8 here and there.
Hope to see you then, chums!!
Cool stuff Mr J! Hope to see you there....
I think I'll be going into bko at intermediate level. Just watched the video of the tricks and I feel pretty confident in myself with it.
Im going to go for beginner I think.. there are a couple on intermediate im not to sure on aha..
Makes sense for both of you, I think - especially at your first competition, there's no need to push yourself too hard!
Over 30 tricks currently on the proto-list for Advanced. Needs some pruning, organising... and filming!
Stay tuned!
Appointment made for a filming location on Tuesday!
Just wondering about regulation string length for competition. Is it 3 fingers max? I normally play with a 2-2.5 finger length string.
No official string length enforcement. Recommended 2-3 fingers.
Thanks :) I'll bear that in mind.
Very excited for this (I do love an excuse for a massive Kendama session). However, I fear it may unfortunately clash rather horrendously with a potential exam I have at an unknown point the following week, time shall tell!
"Clash".
"Following week".
Does not compute!
Haha, I do see your point. I am not a fan of leaving studies until the plane ride home (unless I take my books with me... this could certainly work!).
Okay, I'm in! But depending on work constraints, it'll dictate how many continuous days of clicking I will justify to myself ;)
Beware of the Joker.....

I need Matt to attend the IKO (as soon as I get it confirmed) so, don't overbook him.
His true calling in life is to become the 1st IKO champion ^_^

Void, was he not saying something about an important exam? Don't think he was referring to his Dan gradings.
I've got time off work. Staying at my friends in Oxford. I'll be there :)
Yay, Ben!

Are we only going to play standard sizes in 7-to spike? No jumbos?
I like the joker! Nice addition
Quote from: Dimensions on 21 December, 2014, 14:53:11Are we only going to play standard sizes in 7-to spike? No jumbos
Hmmm, good point. At EKO we noticed a couple of times where a player with a jumbo competed against a player with a comp size kendama, and it didn't seem fair. Okay, we will allow any kendama,
but judges will be instructed to remember that large kendamas are easier to use, and to consider this when voting. (Page updated.)

Thanks, I've had ago at some more size mismatching recently. Jumbo on standard moshikame is fun!
Cracking Joker idea Void! Will give a fantastic edge to the comp.
So now comes the few months of saying how difficult we all find a particular trick, trying to lull an unsuspecting opponent into a false sense of security. However, that cunning individual will then strike when the moment is right, to elicit a secretly mastered trick from their opponent's "force" request...
This is going to be brilliant.
Advanced trick list is up. Video coming soon.

Rad!
Great selection of tricks in here. Thanks @The Void & BKA.
I love it when you see something new that you'd not thought of before - that double grip change (in the UFO trick) is sweet.
:)
Someone local who has any tips on nearby lodging possibilities? Or who has a couch I could sleep on?
Also, getting from London to East Molesey, is the train my best option?
Thank you!
You can get a direct train from London Waterloo every 30 minutes or so. If you can't find a hotel in East Molesey itself (which is quite small) then search in Kingston Upon Thames or Surbiton, which are close by.
Great mixture of tricks, especially the tricks involving a collaboration of multiple hands. The only one I am reluctant to practice is the floor spike, my kens are going to take some serious blunting...
Quick question re: the joker - when you force a trick, is that forcing a trick from any of the 25 on the list, or just forcing an eligible trick for that specific round's list (i.e. first round, could I force a wing walker, or could I only force from #1-10). (Sorry if it is obvious!)
You can only force from the current range of 10 tricks. It would be a bit vicious to allow an Axing in the first round.... :)
Quote from: BKA on 22 December, 2014, 12:25:23

Or extremely funny :)
-Rob
Since I've never passed 1st round, I'm sure to use the joker on it.
More expert players may want to save it for later.
I think it's a good way to "level the field" as well.
Let's practice that one-eyed trick...
does this mean any kendama at all?? must it be BKA approved like before?
ahh nevermind, you were talking about 7 to spike, haha..
I love the bizarreness of the trick selection. Void never ceases to amuse me with exotic tricks.
That said, I'm surprised I am fairly consistent on one of the final tricks, and terrible on a lot of earlier / easier tricks.
A quick question on the moshikame > spike trick, can we stab or does it have to be below the horizontal?
Thanks
-Rob
Quote from: Dimensions on 23 December, 2014, 17:46:10A quick question on the moshikame > spike trick, can we stab or does it have to be below the horizontal?
Stab or Spike. Either is okay.
Nice selection of different tricks here, liking it ;D
Quick question though, with Airplane>Breakaway Trapeze is the trapeze cup specific? During practice I tend to land on the small cup more often than not.
Quote from: mreasyguy on 23 December, 2014, 22:36:42Quick question though, with Airplane>Breakaway Trapeze is the trapeze cup specific? During practice I tend to land on the small cup more often than not.
Either side of the cross-piece is fine.
Bought my train tickets! I will be there!
Are there people lodging nearby and have any tips on where to stay? It could be interesting to have dama-players in the same hotel/hostel.
Now to practice!
Yay Hans!
Actually, I must sort out my own accommodation plans too....
Ooh. I didn't think the BKO was going to be possible for me but it seems the planets are aligning a little better at least. Still not a certainty - but certainly more likely! I hope I can make it, was sooo much fun last year!
Fingers crossed for you, Kev!
Less than 2 months away now, folks! Get your click on!
going to have to pay for travel/accomodation off of this months wage... so i need my plans solid! wheres everyone staying?
Hans and I are staying in a B&B in Sunbury, around 3 miles west. (It's fully booked now.)
Bump! And...

Anyone booked themselves in anywhere yet? Shout out, so people can bunch together if possible.
I'm booked in here:
It's very close to the park and about an hours walk to the hall on day 2, but not too bad if you have wheels
Flights booked!
BKO nicely coincides with a couple of London reunions.
It's likely that I'll only be around for the Sunday. This time I'll be stepping up to the intermediate category.
Looking forward to meeting new faces :D
I'm considering a lightning day trip...
Ah, great, see you both there! :)
HYPE

1 month to go!
Well, I decided to take a express day trip.
Is anyone else going from Heathrow by any chance? We may be able to take a taxi together and save time and money compared to the bus / train.
Yay!
Everything is booked! staying in Warrick Lodge in Surbiton so nice and close. Buzzed already!
Now, questions about the tricks.
For one-eye. Are we allowed to use a patch, or must we cover the eye with the hand? It is quite uncomfortable when you wear glasses...
For kneeling liberty candle: The catch must be above the head. That means the ball must be above the head or the tip of the spike must be above the head?
For prying spike: Only the middle finger can touch the sara-do, but can it not touch it? I find the spot when only my middle finger touches it to be very small.
Oh, and as I said, I can judge the Dan Jam, not really into competing on it.
BUT I may want to enter 7toSpike.
Edit for another question: Will any shop be there? I am open for some trades. I'll open one thread on the Trades section.
Any eye-covering method will be accepted, as long as complete opacity is ensured.
The catch happens on the base cup.
Middle finger must touch the sara-do. Opposite index & ring fingers should touch each other's finger pads, underneath the sara-do.
Thanks for Dan Jam judging, you're hired!
BKA will be trading, hoping to get a nice range in for it.
Nice hype, Dimensions.
Right then, exactly 1 month to go! Time to up your practice levels, people!
Great to hear from all those who have committed so far. So, who else is coming? Let's hear your shouts!:

And, who likes pizza?

Definitely interested on one of the Gold Ozoras. One way or another I'll get one, please reserve it for me ;-)
1 Premium Gold Ozora reserved for shalafi.
Depending on what other damas are around, I could be interested in the natural TK16.
It's possible that we might be able to live stream the BKO. Stay tuned for details...

Looks like it won't be sunny for the social day, unfortunately. Bring a jumper/coat/hood/hat!
Mini family issue for tomorrow where I'm needed for the afternoon. Therefore, social day is a miss I'm afraid.
But Sunday is a certainty, we'll be there for opening time!
So roughly how many people will be making it for both days?

Saturday - we'll make a plan on the day.

Preparing my bag-o-damas for tomorrow. I have to wake up really early...
The streaming has been great, thanks for doing this. For the people who can't make it (and have yet to make it) to one of these events it's nice to get an insight into the days goings on. Looking forward to tomorrows uploads.
Glad you enjoyed it. There don't seem to have been a huge number of views, but probably more will watch tomorrow. We'll see how my 3G holds up......
Watched the lot, albeit in reverse order, which was weird as mreasyguy appeared and then was somehow then missing. Great fun, looking forward to tomorrow's coverage. Nice to see Sam jamming too, just listened to your latest podcast, mate, great stuff! Nice one Rob for cleaning up. Nice one Void for the sweet bit of Jumping Stick practise, oh, and one more thing: Void, don't forget to buy granulated coffee for home, looks like you're almost out.
I foresee that today is going to be a long day...
Harry, Boz, Adam, Keenan and I are currently on the M18 heading south. See everyone in a couple of hours!
Safe travels, everyone!
Thanks for the Bambuser video updates. I think I watched them all. Reminds me of how much fun we had last year. Sad I can't be there but great to share a glimpse. Really looking forward to seeing today. I know you'll be busy but do share what you can!
Best of luck to everyone competing too, enjoy yourselves!
Quick post from my phone while waiting for my plane.
It was lots of fun, as usual. Great to hang out with old pals and to meet new ones too.
As usual I didn't manage to score a point in advanced, but at least I was paired against the champion, so I have a excuse ;-)
Little sleep didn't help my consistency, specially during 7toSpike :-(
On the good side I fought Rob till the very end in a game of pill, both of us with 3 letters and being the only ones remaining. BTW the game of pill was great fun.
And year after year I'm amazed at the consistency of some players on the flesh. Good work guys, keep it on!
Now I seriously need some sleep.
Home. Phew. Knackered. Fun weekend, thanks all for coming. More tomorrow....
Had a quality day with quality people yesterday! Congrats to all who entered... can wait till leeds!

Nice one, guys! Congratulations, Rob, was great to see you doing your thing on the bambuser link-up, really made my Sunday. Bozzy seemed to be killing it on the 7 to Spike, though it was a bit hard to see, well done to you sir for winning that. Well done too to the intermediate and beginner victors, great achievement to rank under pressure. Hope you guys all had a great time and I hope to see you at the EKO this year as well.

Thanks to Void for organising it all and being a super harsh judge
And well done to Sam 'the champion killer' for receiving the Bounty and well done to Bozzy for winning 7-to-spike (again) and giving me a hard time in the Final
Thanks to all for coming and hope to see you all in Leeds or next year, wherever it shall be

Well done Rob, enjoy your title, well deserved.

Watched the streaming footage and it Looked like an enjoyable couple of days.
Also showed my son and he said he would like to go, so I said maybe next year if your still clicking! He'll be 6 And a half by then. Is there an age limit?
Brilliant. Just brilliant.
Sam, Katie and I had such a great time! Sam was riding high after getting his Pre-Dan, and even though Katie didn't play much, she landed her first aeroplane, bought a lovely Ozora Street and told me she loved the whole day.
Thanks yet again, Void. You really know how to bring it all together!
Big congrats to Rob. All all of your hard work and skill were clearly in evidence.
It was so awesome to see all you guys again, and to meet some new clickers!
Back off to work after my wonderful weekend abroad. Highlights include:
- English Mega Breakfast
- Watching Donald's edit together with Void and going 'Whaat?'
- Getting 2-turn turntable, even though no one saw it (the first time)
- 7 to spike on the social day gathering a small audience in the park. People managing to handroll out of every single trick.
- Maico sets up the camera and craziness ensues. I would live to see all that footage!
- Doing more stuntplane to lighthouses than I can count
- The Bead Trick
- Getting over 500 moshikame (although failing on the bird afterwards) with Sam and Kitty supporting me from the sideline (thanks guys)
- Doing my first grading as an examiner, although it was a bit messier than I would have wanted (sorry for all the confusion Maico!)
- Judging intermediate, which I really enjoyed
- Getting a point in at the advanced competition. Too bad I practiced my floor spike wrong...
- Watching the advanced competitions, which were very tense at times. Bozzy and Rob both managing bird turn for example...
- Landing quite a deal of tricks in the first 7 to spike round (and then failing horribly in the final)
- Rob's lunar sequence in the 7 to spike (big cup lunar, rover to inward, somersault and in)
- Overall skill level in the 7 to spike
- Getting my trap sequence in the Dan Jam
- Rob's Dan Jam which was from another world (I hope that footage finds his way on to this forum fast).
- Kendamatty's tech tricks that never cease to amaze me
- Rob's father's face when he learned that his son was the British champion
- MrJumpshoe's merry-go-round on the train back and the confusion/hilarity that came after
- Having someone to help me navigate London railways back to Shoreditch, thanks Sam!
- A surprise late night kendama demo for a Japanese guest staying at my cousin's place.
And probably so much more that I forgot. It was great to meet some people again, and meeting new players. Thanks Void for the hotel arrangements, and just for the organization overall. I got to see up close how much work goes into this, so I take my hat off to you sir!
Hope to make it to another event soon. Apparently Belgium is closer than I thought :-)
Hey
@HansNickmans I want you in next year Irish Open. After The Netherlands and UK, that one is next ;-)

I managed to get a return flight to Leeds for 40 euros. I still can't believe it, I was expecting something in the range of 150.
Had an awesome time, thanks to everyone involved I can't wait for EKO now.
I didn't expect to make it past the 1st round in advanced so to get to the final and win the 7tospike I was very pleased.
Well done to everyone!
Nice work Bozzy! smashed it bro.. Love your style of play.
Advanced was intense to watch let alone compete congrats to all.
@kendamatty @Dimensions here you have the fast hand bird, at 0:50. So it CAN be done. It even looks easy.

Anybody who has the Social Day 7 to spike on video?
@HansNickmans there is a fair bit in my extended version, or do you want the whole thing?
Ok, for some reason I completely missed your video of the BKO! Got some catching up to do!
I found my photos from (mostly) the Social Day.
