Anybody have any tips for doing turntables?

If you're in standard ken grip, the finger you spin the ken on should be further to the right, as it makes the ken spin faster to the left. Hope that helps

Seen 'em done from Pen grip or from Ken grip. Also seen done on index finger or middle finger. Experiment!

Knees. Beginning the Turntable just as you 'pop up' helps to keep the pressure between the ken and tama, so the Turntable tends not to fall apart so much. Works for me!

If you don't want to BUY MY BOOKS 😉, then why not ask your local library to order them in, and read them for free? That would help too. Cheers!

I'm trying to learn this - as it fits perfectly on the end of one of the combos i do.

I'm having absolutely no success. The tama always comes off before it's spun even halfway round, i think my technique must be totally off.

Tried to find some decent tutorials but I can't. I'm not even sure if it's called a finger spin as when i youtube that i get tutorials for a totally different trick :(

Can anyone give me any tips? The way i've been doing it is trying to give it a bit of upwards push to "loft" it and then spin. Like for turnovers, so the tama stays in the cup.  But the videos seem to do the opposite, like they're lowering the whole thing while they do it.

also, would it be easier to do this with a new kendama, that's still all smooth and wooden, or my beautiful broken in bamboo one, which has a layer of oil and crud on it now?

Search for "turntable". You should find some tips.

thanks :) did find some stuff when looking for the right trick. Also that guy who did like 7 in one go... wow, total control.

I'm still having no luck, whatsoever. I'm wondering if it's my funky grip that's stopping me? The only time i attempt this is after i've gone from...

secret grip > spike > base cup > big cup and then i'm left with this...

I doubt the grip'll make much difference, it probably is my lack of practice/skills that's letting me down here, but i do have trouble trying to give it a push to start it rotating from this grip.

As I seem to remember was mentioned in the Turntables thread, we've seen pretty much every possible technique variant of approaches to this trick: forefinger only, fore and middle fingers together, middle finger only, shallow start, steep start (as if you were spinning a basketball on a finger) - just forget about all that for now and find out what works for you.

As you said you only do this trick as part of a combo, I suggest you spend a few minutes each session just trying the movement for Turntable. It's often difficult to learn a trick without isolating it and spending a bit of extra time on it. The best part about it: you will get there, just keep at it!

I seem to have way different problems with turntables. It's not the start but the finnish for me. I can do it to the end but it always gets wrong with te catch :(

Sqveel

I've managed to get my turntables to actually turn 360 most of the time now. :)

Catching/stopping it... that's a whole different ball game.

Catch/stop tips:
The whole ken will probably swing to one side in the move: follow it with your shoulders.
Sink low, catch soft, more knees!
