Heya there!
Got a brand new ken with a super silly short spike. To the point where its unusable.
Ive heard of people 'priming' their set up specific for such tricks as lunars by adjusting where the sarado sits.
I assume this is by taking some fine sandpaper and sanding untill 'primed'.
But before i get to that i thought i would just ask if there is any advice on the matter before potentially butchering my wood.

[Mod edit: adjusted spelling of "sarado" for the benefit of searchers.]
Also, "sara-do" is the strictly correct spelling. Telling you this for the benefit of searching, not to rebuke.
And, use it for a while first! : http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1612.msg12294.html#msg12294 (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1612.msg12294.html#msg12294)
I can confirm that they do get down within a few days of play.
My example is quite extreme.
So nobody does sanding at all?
Is it taboo?
I never have but would do if I felt it necessary.
I think it would be a 'disallowed modification' from a grading point of view though (but it would need to be a BKA / JKA approved kendama in the first place if this was an issue).
Off the top of my head I can't remember which but one if the common makes comes with a pretty short spike - anyone recall what I'm thinking of?
Overall, if anything for me I find the opposite issue to be more of a problem (I.E. Sara-do getting too far down) but a sliver of masking tape under the Sara-do fixes this anyway.
The advantage of both is that no single kendama is best for all tricks that's why having a few different ones is always a good idea.
My advice (if you want it) is: just play with it until it wears in naturally.

Cheers for the help.
Thought I would add a photo.
Going to leave the brand anonymous.
This is my progress in getting the Sara-do shifted down just by play.
Still quite a way to go!

I agree with above.. just keep playing it and no doubt it will go down..
Also Kevs idea of some masking tape to stop the sara-do from shifting is a great idea!
my royal needs this treatment..
