Okay, now I can start planning the trip. London is easy (and rather cheap) to reach from Brussels, if anyone is driving from there and needs someone to split the gas costs, let me know!

Hey Hans,

If you don't manage to find someone to share a lift with, trains from London to Leeds can be as little as £20 return if you book long enough in advance - plenty of time to get sorted.

[user]Kev[/user] where do you find those really cheap train tickets?
Title: Re: British Kendama Open 2014, Leeds, May 3rd/4th
Post by: Kev on 07 October, 2013, 17:40:04
@Dimensions Generally the trainline.com. Cheap tickets are usually available from around 12 weeks before a date. The super cheap ones go really quickly but I just had a look now for some next month as test and the cheapest I could find we're about £14 each way (sometimes 2 singles are cheaper than a return).

Maybe £20 was a little optimistic but it's certainly possible, £30 should be no problem.

If you're feeling brave and money is tight then there is always the megabus.

Had a good run through the list this evening and got most within a few tries but it's the usual suspects that give me grief. (That Damn Pirouette!!)

Really nice and playful list, and enough to challenge alot of players.

Some interesting ones, as every year. I like Dead Body already

Looks like a great list - inspiring, fun and tricky (many beyond me at the mo but good to see the future ;) ) - will no doubt make for an exciting competition.

I keep rewatching this, partly for the tricks and partly for the brilliant Buck 65 soundtrack +1 :)

Roll on BKO 2014!

Again Void, a very challenging list you have conjured up this year!  I am really looking forward to learning a lot of the tricks on the list, some I have not even attempted so this should be a nice challenge in itself!  I should also have a new recruit or two with me to bring this year to the competition, us Cambridgions shall be there in force! 8)

Hey guys, long time no see!

I've been very busy at work so haven't had much time for forum posting. However this post is to confirm I shall be attending the 2014 BKO 100%. It's practice, practice, practice from here on out so I can't wait to meet up with everyone again and have some serious fun in may.

And I'll be back on the forum from now on aswell! :p

Found some pretty cheap coach bus tickets from London to Leeds, so it looks like it's going to work out rather fine.

Are there any cheap places to stay near the BKO? Even if it's in a fellow clicker's back yard?

Travel info, helpfully compiled by local boy [user]Kev[/user]:

Local Knowledge:
Adel is pronounced (A-dul) to rhyme with 'saddle', not (Ay-del) as in 'cradle'. This may help when getting a bus or taxi especially as there is a place called Idle (yes, really) not too far away which is pronounced similarly.

The Sunday venue:
Adel War Memorial Association
Church Lane
Leeds
LS16 8DE (http://www.adelclub.co.uk/index.php/contact)

If travelling from central Leeds to the BKO2014 the easiest route is:
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=leeds,+yorkshire&daddr=adel,+yorkshire&hl=en&sll=53.825358,-1.571075&sspn=0.083895,0.186081&geocode=FT_xNAMd6V7o_ymZvWTaSj55SDGp3BMC_bqtUQ%3BFUSrNQMd_NDn_ymj3zcuAVl5SDGLvw-_19NPeQ&mra=ls&t=m&z=13 (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=leeds,+yorkshire&daddr=adel,+yorkshire&hl=en&sll=53.825358,-1.571075&sspn=0.083895,0.186081&geocode=FT_xNAMd6V7o_ymZvWTaSj55SDGp3BMC_bqtUQ%3BFUSrNQMd_NDn_ymj3zcuAVl5SDGLvw-_19NPeQ&mra=ls&t=m&z=13)

TRAVEL TO LEEDS -
By car:
From the south use M1
From the north use A1(M)
East & west use M62 / M621 motorways.

By train:
Travel by train to Leeds from all major UK cities - http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/)

By air:
Leeds is served by : Leeds Bradford Airport (http://www.leedsbradfordairport.co.uk/) and Manchester airport (http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/manweb.nsf). Flights are available from a huge number of places.

:) Leeds Bradford airport is approximately 5 miles away from the BKO2014.
:( Manchester is about 60 miles away but caters for long haul flights.

Coach from EMA to Leeds: http://www.eastmidlandsairport.com/emaweb.nsf/Content/coach (http://www.eastmidlandsairport.com/emaweb.nsf/Content/coach) (3 hours  :()
By bus / coach:

National Express coaches - http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx (http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx)
Megabus - http://uk.megabus.com/ (http://uk.megabus.com/)

TRAVEL IN LEEDS:
Bus:
Bus services are frequent in Leeds (although less so on a Sunday). Visit the West Yorkshire Metro website (http://www.wymetro.com/) and First Leeds (http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/yorkhumber/leeds/home/) for up to date timetables and general information nearer the time.

You can also call the Metro Line for bus travel advice / timetables anytime on +441132457676.

Buses heading from the city centre to Adel are the number 1 and the number 28.

However another good option is -

Taxi:
Taxis are quite cheap in Leeds, if shared by two or more people they can often be cheaper than the bus!

Good taxi numbers are:
Amber Cars - 01132311366
Ace Cars - 01132304499
Royal Cars - 01132305000

Note - City / black cabs are more expensive than minicabs so its best to use the numbers provided.

A cab from the city centre to the venue will be £8-12 maximum, and will take around 10-15 mins. Cabs from Headingley to the venue should be no more than £5.

PLACES TO STAY:
Google is (https://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&ie=UTF-8&q=hotels+near+LS16+8DE&fb=1&hq=hotels&hnear=0x4879590a22334301:0xd55aaeab838498b4,Adel,+LS16+8DE,+UK&ei=UQbIUvypAo7n7Aamp4GwAQ&ved=0CM4BEMgT) your friend (https://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&ie=UTF-8&q=bed+and+breakfast+near+LS16+8DE&fb=1&hq=bed+and+breakfast&hnear=0x4879590a22334301:0xd55aaeab838498b4,Adel,+LS16+8DE,+UK&ei=nQbIUuTcG8T17AbSu4CQDQ&ved=0CNIBEMgT) and there are many places to stay in Leeds - but for what it's worth, the YHA in Headingley (http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/leeds-carnegie-village) looks like the cheapest and best located option.

I'd recommend checking laterooms.com for discounts in hotels greater than going direct to the hotels.

After the event on Sunday:
The plan is to head to The Stables Pub (http://www.weetwood.co.uk/page.php/id=621) in the grounds of Weetwood Hall for food and drink.

Did a little snooping around to price this trip up for me and found the Ibis hotel is a little cheaper than the YHA.

It looks very central and as It will probably be easier for me to travel up on the Friday and leave the Monday this seems Ideal. it works out £107.35 for a standard twin room for the 3 nights.

It is a bit further away from the venue for the Sunday but if taxi's are cheap enough this should be OK.

http://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/ibis-leeds-centre.en-gb.html (http://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/ibis-leeds-centre.en-gb.html)

Just gotta make sure I get the time booked off in work and then get it Booked!

The Ibis is a good shout I reckon [user]mreasyguy[/user].

If you're travelling from there to the venue on the Sunday I highly recommend going up Cardigan Road to Headingley then on to Adel rather than going through the city, it will be much quicker and also cheaper in a cab.

I started practicing this evening. Don't know if I can make it, but who knows ... And the advanced list is quite funny to practice. I already managed new tricks tonight (Around Britain, 1-Handed Flying Top, and Trapeze > Aeroplane). But that'll be out of my league, it's just for fun. If I join, it would be for the intermediate. Apart from the Falling Down, the tricks are quite feasible - just have to work on speed.

Well its been a few months now. I just bought a new Sunrise Kendama (complete with the Spike Book - great work Void), totally different feel to what i previously used. I can land most tricks apart from Lighthouse + falling down, and Swing in (really haven't found the knack for this yet). However im still not able to land 1/5 consistently.

Not sure if i can make it to Leeds yet but will know shortly if i can afford time off and the trip itself.

Is there anyone going in for the Beginners on here?

Ok, just as an update for me
I would say there is around a 85% chance of me going - (oof, 4 hour drive[nb]thanks dad![/nb])

At the moment I'm going to do the advanced competition, I really like the trick list - especially C-Whip ;) (all my diabolo training helped!)
The tricks I'm struggling on
-Dead body (about 1 in 10)
-1 turn delayed swing in (1 in 6)
And landing strip > in (1 in 4)

But apart from them the tricks are, at most, 1 in 3 for each trick

Day 1 also looks like it is going to be amazing, and after reading a couple of reviews from last years it is the part I am most looking forward to

Hopefully see you all there

-Rob

Just had a good run through
Got all of the first 10 first go - but with 1 miss on Scoop Up and a fair few on Dead Body
Missed the aeroplane on J-Stick
And another miss on the Pirrouette
A few misses on Monkey's chair
Then a few misses on Moon Circle and Half-Swirl Aeroplane

So not bad me-thinks

My travel plans were becoming rather fixed, but apparently we have an opportunity that weekend to spread kendama in our hometown. On May 4th, the Japanese Garden of our city has its opening weekend and wants to include kendama in the activities of that day... So I'm gonna try and collaborate with the local circusstore (that sells kendamas) to get something going.

Too bad that it's on the same day, but I'll probably save up the money to get to Denmark this summer. Hopefully with some more Belgian players :-)

I really wanted to come, so hopefully next year...

Ay up folk! So last week my car died a very uneventful death, so all seemed lost for coming to leeds in an affordable manner (I.e. avoiding trains). Therefore I have commandeered my university minibus, and am happy to collect people en route of they chuck me petrol cash? Im driving from Cambridge around 9am Saturday morming and leaving leeds around 7pm sunday eve.
Any takers? I will have the bus confirmed in 2 weeks but want to start planning the route! Currently have me, girlfriend, luke (big guy counterpart) and possibly one more confirmed.  5 more seats remain!

Lastly, and affordable bed n breakfasts someone can recommend which are close enough to the venue and will have parking?
Many thanks

There was a previous post in this thread about hotels. (Often much the same price as B&Bs, I find). Dunno if Kev has any other local suggestions though.

The closest two options to the venue hotel-wise are the Mercure Parkway on the Otley Road and Weetwood Hall. These will not be the very cheapest option available but they will be a reasonable average for a decent place to stay.

[user]mreasyguy[/user] found that the Ibis nearer the city centre (Kirkstall or Burley Road I think) was the most competitive price he could find. I also suggested the YHA in Headingley.

Headingley is a couple of miles from the venue and has quite a lot of bed and breakfast places and smaller hotels due to the cricket and rugby grounds.

The venue is only a couple of minutes from the ring road so as well as exploring options along the route straight out of town northward from the city centre, through Headingley and on to Adel, you could also consider the Travel Lodge type places that are dotted around the ring road.

The Otley road is the main road from the city north to Adel and on a week day I'd avoid it due to commuters / traffic but as we are talking about the weekend you can make it from the venue to the city centre in around ten maybe fifteen minutes by car.

So, if you've got wheels, you will have the pick of places to stay in town as well.

For those without wheels, see earlier in the thread for advice on buses and taxis which are quite reasonably priced.

Any more questions just ask!

Cheers for the advice Kev, I am a cost conscious kind of guy so I think I should manage something!

Again, minibus seats up for grabs! Depending on where you are, as little as a tenner per person petrol contribution if I do not have to stray too far afield!  It is a 16 seater so plenty of room! send me a private message for info!

Having just spent a week at BJC2014 totally focused on kendama play I'm even more super excited about the upcoming BKO. There's no better way to improve than playing and practicing with other people!

So who's coming? Let's do a little head count!

(Remember: its not too late to bring a friend or two with you even if they don't play yet, it'll be a great place to get started - spread the word!)

Also C-whips are inmpossible with any kind of breeze

@SamB, ive found that hanging pirouette is easier if you throw the kendama up as little as possible, just a little toss so that its in the air for just the right amount of time..

I'm struggling with them a lot, and then my friend decided to do a 720 hanging pirouette in my face.. -_-

Hi!

I have a SPECIAL LIMITED OFFER for those of you coming to the BKO!

I have a small number of brand new Ozora kendama that will be for sale exclusively to you.

Colours available include: Yellow, Light Blue, Green and Natural Unpainted Woodgrain.

The price (for anyone to buy) per kendama will be £13 each (yes - even for the yellows and light blues).

BUT!

IF you are a card carrying member of the BKA the price per kendama will be just £10!

(See here for membership details http://www.kendama.co.uk/contact.html (http://www.kendama.co.uk/contact.html)).

If you'd like to reserve any, please PM me - I can put them aside for you.

I'm working on a first come first served basis, so the most active forum members get to see this first.

(I don't have very many available so I'm limiting sales to one of each colour for each person at present).

Join the BKA, grab a bargain, get clicking!

Hey Guys! Long time no post... (as usual)  :P

Just to confirm that me and Will are heading up for both days.  ;D

We're just sorting out our (last minute) travel plans and were wondering if anyone is driving up from around Bristol area with a couple of spare seats? The main reason being that trains and buses get us to Leeds a couple of hours after everyone is meeting on Saturday and leave quite soon after the BKO on Sunday. Obviously, this leaves us not enough time for socialising! So yeah just putting it out there, worth a try.

Either way we'll see you all there and can't wait. I have not been practicing enough recently due being very busy at work v_v but as usual Will is smashing it.  :P

Ah, also. What hotels are people staying at? We have yet to book (been too  busy! >.<) so might be useful to get some info/opinions on the subject. Obviously, it's already been discussed but if anyone has anything to add...

Super excited to see everyone again and meet new people. BKO!  :D

also @Rich.. me and 3 others are staying at the premier inn in leeds city center, cost £110 for 2 nights, which isnt too bad if you're sharing a room!

FAO: Anyone coming to the BKO Social Day - Sat 3rd May

I have reserved a table at a fantastic little Japanese restaurant ( http://www.littletokyo-leeds.co.uk/ (http://www.littletokyo-leeds.co.uk/) ) in Leeds for 7pm on Sat 3rd for us all to enjoy some reasonably priced but high quality food after our day of fun.

It's a great place with something to suit nearly everyone (lots of veggie and non-veggie available and meal prices ranging from £8-£18).

As it's a very small place and being Bank Holiday I thought it wise to book so currently I've reserved 15 places. I've promised to let them know if there will be more or less people coming so . . . if you'd like to come along can you please let me know asap so we don't mess them around too much?

Reply in this thread or PM me. :)

Ooh, controversy! We were just going through the results... http://kendama.co.uk/bko2014.html (http://kendama.co.uk/bko2014.html) has now been updated with full scores for the Advanced division too. BUT, we noticed a mistake had been made. Matt was actually 8th, not 5th, and positions 6-8 all move up a place as a result. The previous post has been updated.

[user]kendamatty[/user] - you keep your prize, as it was not your mistake, but ours. [user]SamB[/user] and [user]Hoggyhogghogg[/user] - prizes for 5th-7th were roughly the same, so no harm done.
[user]MisterJumpshoe[/user] - We'll make it up to you, sorry!

Whoa! What a weekend that was!
It flew by really quickly and landed loads of new tricks including: 0.5 UFO to lighthouse, clap Jumping Stick and my first inward lighthouse flip!
Competition day was great too! My aim was to at least get past round 1 but somehow I ended up in the final against [user]Thorny[/user]! But, his experience got the better of me and he won 3-5, but I'm happy at that as it was my first BKO - next year...
Oh, and sorry I had to pop off early from competition day :( - it looks like you had a good time even after!
Also [user]Void[/user], you thank so many people and never get thanked yourself, thanks for organising these events - I bet it is a lot of work! Hats off to you

Unfortunately I won't be making it to EKO this year but hope to meet you all soon!

-Rob

P.S can ask when the video of Sunday will come out?

So I was 7th, eh?  Cool bananas, as a friend of mine used to say.

I would like to make the EKO, but I just don't know.  It's gonna come around really quickly, so I'd better make the ol' mind up!

Cheers for your help during the exams, Void.  The moshi counting is just a confidence thing for me.  I know I can do it, I'm just worried I'll sell someone short and let them and you down.  Might sound a bit daft and I do intend to just go ahead and do it.  I enjoy giving the exams and was glad I could do eight while at the BKO.  My job is safe until next year!

I'm working on my own little BKO video today.  I'm not sure when I can upload it as the internet here is a little sketchy.  I'll do my best!!

Great to see some friends again and to make some new ones!  I love that, it happens every year!! :D

Back home in Fife now, the captial of UK kendama :)

The weekend was lots of fun, nice to catch up with folk and meet more forum members.

Big thanks and congratulations to Kev and Void for making it all happen.  And the cake was excellent!

Thanks everyone. Glad to hear that folks had a good time. A big congrats to everyone, but perhaps especially to [user]Dimensions[/user] and [user]Thorny[/user].

Mr Jumpshoe, it'll be great to see your vid, as mine will be a bit "ordinary", as I only have the onstage action. Might take a few days to get it done, as I have to film some other stuff tomorrow.

Well, I just invested in some of these for the BKA box.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the thanks! Ruth and I had such a great time both planning and taking part in the BKO - ultimately it's the people that make it though - so we are really glad you enjoyed it.

I'd like to add to the big thanks to [user]Void[/user], especially having seen first hand how much time and effort he put in to this weekend. He really is dedicated to making sure we all have a great time and to helping the kendama scene grow bigger and better every day. It's amazing to think the BKO was just one of the many things he'll be doing for us this year. Sir, I salute you!

Oh, and I think that picture of [user]mreasyguy[/user] and his now legendary onion lollipop is my favourite pic of the weekend! We should get it on a t shirt!

Nice one Jakub, I really loved this trick (as you can *just* see from my reaction in the corner of the video!)

This is the one I was talking about [user]Void[/user] that you describe as 'confidential' - do my ears deceive me? (It's quite possible!).

Ah, right, yes. This name came from Donald, who did a trick into/from that grip [ http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,653.msg4755.html#msg4755 (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,653.msg4755.html#msg4755) , @2m:53s ].
The idea being it was slightly less than "secret" grip, so we jokingly called it "confidential" grip. :-)

Well that was a good weekend wasn't it!  The minibus turned out to be quite useful in the end which I'm please about (a small victory to justify the enormous carbon footprint left behind from driving in total around 400 miles in that tank). (14 seats transporting 17 people, that's ok right?...)

Great Hosting and organisation again by Void (as always), it was a well orchestrated event with a great variety of things going on, and the pace of the competiton was really good and the prizes were fantastic (including my ill-gotten gain - it will not be wasted dont worry!)

I can't say that I'm not a little gutted, but I got knocked out by someone who practiced much more than me (so well deserved Rob!).  Also well done Thorny, you definitely deserved the titled, well played sir!

And Donald's Dan Jam was certainly very entertaining (nice work you string wizard you).

Good to see the young scottish lads in person, they are very good and entertaining to watch (I especially enjoyed the final ken battle we had at the end - The bird is certainly the word).

Kev and Ruth, fantastic hosting, you are two very nice people! I'll be glad to return the favour if you are around Cambridge anytime :)

And big shout out to SamB's family for having us for a much needed cuppa and a bite to eat in the hardest place to negotiate turns in a bus EVER.

And anyone who wasn't there... come next time!

My girlfriend and Luke had an incredible time (despite very tired legs), and can't wait for the next event!

Cheers all,

Matt

If any prize-winners fancy posting a "thumbs up" pic of themselves with their prizes (and BKA card if appropriate), then that'd be cool.
No obligation though.

A few snapperoonies of the weekend.  We met a guy in the pub, and he loved it so much he went onto Ebay and bought one there and then!

Final photo is with our prizes - thanks sponsors you have made us very happy!

Cheers Matt, nice to see the pics. Good job you had the minibus too - could have been a complete cat-herding job to get everyone to the park otherwise!

I'm pleased that the Bounty Prize finally did its job - spurring someone on to practise hard enough to beat you. Although to be fair to Rob - he probably had enough enthusiasm without it! :)

Looking forwards to the next jam. For me that'll be Bungay Balls Up (http://juggler.net/bungayballsup/), which I'm off to next Friday, for a spot of chilled clicking with [user]ian[/user], [user]Ian F[/user], [user]orinoco[/user], and others. Then probably Oxford (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1772.0.html).
