Title: Official BKA gradings
Post by: BKA on 08 January, 2012, 07:38:18
A new year, and a new grading system. The BKA is now issuing Kyu, Pre-Dan and Dan certificates to anyone who can pass an exam (http://kendama.co.uk/exam.html). The first examinations will be held in Bristol at BoB juggling convention (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,285.0.html) on 21st January, with more held at the NRC (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,187.0.html) if time allows. Forum members who pass an exam will be listed on the players register (http://kendama.co.uk/dan.html), and also have their rank added to their forum profile.

This is rather boss! And similar to any exam I've ever done, will involve loads of people crammed into a huge sports hall with only determination and a pen (of course, in this case it will be determination and a ken - the parallels are uncanny.)
Nice thought chaps, and here's hoping one day I can get a certificate through remotely sending you a video, the chances of me making any juggling conventions in the near future are about as likely as me ever landing stilt-flips...
John.

This is great!! I'm hoping to make it to a convention to try out for first dan!

So what's next: BKA approved seals on european made kendamas?

Good job, now european people can get there Dan exams too, according the JKA trick list.
(if they are member ofcourse)

is it possible to get a BKA grading at the BKO in April?

Taking the exams is not limited to forum members, only being listed on the register is limited.

And yes there will be exams at the BJC, although comp day may be a little tight, but we'll try to squeeze in the people who are only there for the day.

BKA did some kyu gradings as a one-off at BKO 2010. Unfortunately we didn't keep a full record of who got what.
So yes, those count. Dig out your certificate and let us know what grade you got, and we'll update your record.

Not too bad, respect. Yet, well, do I have to travel to the UK for that, or are you folks joining us abroad in other Countries? What are your plannings to "export" this certification to other countries, let's say with "certified judges", or "send in videos for approval" or how are you going to spread this in other countries??

Would have appreciated a more European approach (oh, I am always complaining, god damn it, Peter, what has happend, to you New Year's resolution?)... anyhow, great step forward. :-)

Coo!

Is there any difference between JKA & BKA certificates (does the JKA acknowledge BKA rankings)?

edit: missing my 1st Kyu (http://kendama.co.uk/kyu.html) on my posts!

And I am quite currious how will you deal with my name  ;)

Btw. you should make it European from the beggining and for free.
Btw2. did you read last version of JKA Kendama skill levels and examination? According to this rules you must have dan 1 and 2 before you try 3rd dan.

Explanation:

Must qualify at each dan level before eligible to take examination for the next higher dan rank
Minimum time in rank before competing for next higher dan rank:
§ 1 dan through 5 dan – at least one month
§ 6 dan and above – at least one year

Check it out http://www.kendama.or.jp/english#toc-5-example-of-competition-rules (http://www.kendama.or.jp/english#toc-5-example-of-competition-rules)

Yes we have read the JKA page. The BKA follows this system.
We also follow the example of the JKA exams. For example, you can go from 1st Kyu to 3rd Dan in one exam, but in doing so you would have to do all the Pre-Dan, 1st Dan, 2nd Dan and 3rd Dan tricks along the way.
Subsequent exams will require the same time lapse before being taken.

We will try to get your name right... :)

Quote from: Mirek on 08 January, 2012, 19:24:26Btw. you should make it ... free.
Do you sell your kendamas for free? We'd love to know where you get your photocopying done for free. And where you buy your printer ink and high-grade paper for free. :)

The fees we charge are pretty small really, and unsuccessful entrants at the higher grades get a refund. Imagine this: someone takes a Dan exam, but fails on the very last trick. They get a refund, so they've only paid £2, but the exam could have taken half an hour! How much is your time worth?

Also, if something is free it can be perceived to have no "worth".  These are serious exams, and the award of a certificate is meant to be a meaningful recognition of effort. Someone who really wants to do well at these gradings has to put in a lot of time and effort into their skills and practice. To such a person the fee is of little consequence - the achievement of a Dan certificate is a great feeling.

On your blog you wrote that the JKA gradings are free. Actually the JKA do normally charge for gradings, but our friends at Munich were kind enough to waive this charge for us, since we (as European-based players) would not also be getting the other benefits of JKA membership. This BKA initiative was created so that players will have more than just one chance a year to acheive a grading.

Also, endeavours that take time, planning and outlay are rarely free. The gradings are designed to bring an extra factor into the kendama scene - hopefully one that players will want to strive to achieve. Ultimately we hope it will help to build the scene even more. Which should mean that you will sell more kendamas! :)

Quote from: Mirek on 08 January, 2012, 19:24:26Btw. you should make it European from the beggining.
Well of course we want this to go across Europe. Very glad to hear in your blog that you want to work "hard to be the first to implement them." Watch this space!

Hopefully this post does not come across as defensive - we're just trying to explain the thought processes, and hopefully make things clearer (and more exciting?!) to everyone.

Is £2 the actual price? Because for me, I agree with what you're saying... I'd happily pay a small fee for the chance of achieving something like this and will be attempting (and hopefully succeeding) the 1st Dan exam at the NRC.

Can you explain in a little more detail when the exams will be held in York to me, please?

£10 for a dan exam. £2 is the minimum you would pay if you failed on last trick, and also for the Kyu exams. £5 is pre dan.

You pay £10 for a Dan exam, £5 for Pre-Dan, or £2 for a Kyu. If you are taking a Pre-Dan or Dan exam, and you fail to improve, you get £3 or £8 back from your fee.

The NRC is slotted for 1-4, so I'm reserving 12-1 for lunch and a bit of relaxing, then setting up. Depending on what time I get there in the morning, I should hopefully be able to slot in a couple of exams before 12. Then a couple of hours after the NRC, but before dinner & the evening show. I will try to prioritise exam slots for those based further North, who are unlikely to be able to make it to Bristol/Bath/Birmingham.

We were asked some questions offline, but we'll answer them publicly here for everyone's info:

Q: So, you don't have to do moshi kame for 5th & 6th Dan?
A: That's correct.

Q: Do you have to do the 4th Dan before you can enter the 5th?
A: You can 'jump' grades in one exam (if you achieve all the relevant tricks along the way), but only to a maximum of 4th Dan. So you have to get to 4th Dan and then wait to take another exam.

Q: When can I take my next exam?
A: You have to wait a minimum time between exams. How long exactly depends on the grade you are going for:
Kyu 10-6: 1 day
Kyu 5-1: 1 week
Pre-dan - 5th Dan: 1 month
6th Dan: 1 year
Title: Re: Official BKA gradings

oke, thanks.

just for example, i have the first Dan, and i want to do the 4th dan, then i first have to do the 1000 moshikames?
and after that i do all the tricks that belong to the 4th Dan.
after that i have to do the Speedtrick B in 60 seconds for the final to pass.

then i have to wait one month to enter the 5th Dan (if it is possible), and then i don't have to do the moshikames 1000 times but only the tricks in the ladder and the speedtrick B in 45 seconds?

Moshi Kame is HARD!
Title: Re: Official BKA gradings
Post by: SamB on 16 April, 2012, 16:40:29
I've now seen these gradings done by a few different and very highly skilled players on 3 occasions and attempted it twice myself now and would like to offer 1 tip.
If you are going to attempt any grading (BKA or JKA) it is all well and good practicing the trick list but...

PRACTICE MOSHI KAME!!!!!

It is by far the hardest part of any grading and it is completely different doing it with someone watching and knowing you have only one attempt to do a certain number whilst worrying that you're doing it fast enough than doing it in your own home with unlimited attempts and no specific target. Plus it can be over brutally fast (one rimshot at 196 ball flies off subconsciously caught by my left hand while the rest of my brain stops in disbelief that I was so close to a dan grade).

This one reason is why a huge amount of respect should be given to anyone with any of these grades because, to be honest, it is really flipping hard!!!

Thanks for the encouragement and the exam at BJC, Void.  All in all I'm pretty pleased to have 2nd Kyu to show for a few months practice.  Perhaps on a good day I might have reached 1st, but then on a bad I'd have fallen short of 2nd.  As Sam said, it's harder in an exam than in your own home.  After being brought down to earth in the Kendama comp it was good to finish with this!

Could someone help with the following queries please?

For 1st Kyu, does Moshi Kame need to be at 135 bpm (or indeed at any particular speed)?  What about pre-dan?

Looking ahead, you understand - I have no illusions about passing pre-dan just yet!

Thanks,
Chris
Title: Re: Official BKA gradings

For Pre-dan and above, it certainly does need to be at that speed (at least). For Kyu grades, in theory it should, but since it is only a "beginner" grade, we (and the JKA too, I believe) are more lenient. As long as a constant pace[nb]more or less[/nb] is kept, say at about 60+ bpm, then that's okay.

First off: All the information I'm referencing, if from the JKA Advanced Skill Level Table on www.kendama.co.uk (http://www.kendama.co.uk) :)

Let's take 3rd Dan for example (the one I regularly attempt...)

For 1st and 2nd Dan you have to do Around The World and Lighthouse 4 and 5 times (respectively for 1st and 2nd Dan) but for 3rd, these boxes are left blank. This mean you begin with landing Slip-On-Stick 5 times out of 10, correct?

I was unsure whether or not you perform these tricks as they aren't listed in the table (but I presumed you don't).

I was also wondering, for 4th Dan you have 1 attempt to perform at least 1000 Moshikame - for 5th and 6th Dan the Moshikame section of the table has no information. Does this mean you have to again, only perform at least 1000 Moshikame to proceed? I never questioned this, as I've only ever reached in excess of 1000 Moshi's once!
I did self-certify myself as 4th Dan afterwards as well.... but I got lucky on the Moshi's. I'd say I'm 3rd Dan!

Some enlightening on these questions would be great! Thanks people!

Those tables show what you have to do for each grade, on the assumption that you have already qualified the previous level. If you have not done a grading before, you must start at 10th Kyu, and do ALL the required tricks for each grade, working your way upwards. So for example, the 5th and 6th Dan grades do not mention Moshi, because you (theoretically) already did the 1000 for 4th Dan. You don't have to repeat any trick that is a blank, because it is assumed that you have already reached the required standard of that trick on a previous grade.
Title: Re: Official BKA gradings
Post by: Thorny on 13 May, 2012, 19:23:51
I see.

So, in Poland if I wanted to become certified of a Dan ranking (taking into account I've never been certified) I'd have to do all of the Kyu rankings in one, or separate exams(?) and then attempt a Dan ranking?

Am I correct in thinking that?
Title: Re: Official BKA gradings
Post by: BKA on 13 May, 2012, 20:08:44
You'll do one exam. It will start with a moshi run, and that will show us your possible maximum grade. (e.g. If you got 346, that would mean a maximum possible grading of 2nd Dan.) You would then start making your way through the Kyu compulsory tricks, starting right from Big Cup. If you succeed with all of those, you try all the Pre-Dan tricks, and if you get all of those, you start on the Dan tricks. If you then (for example) got 3 Earth Turns out of 10, that would mean you could not get 2nd Dan (because that requires 4), but you would continue trying to get 1st Dan. If you then got as far as Jumping Stick, but failed to get 1 out of 10, you would then be awarded Pre-Dan. But if you got that 1 JS, you'd be 1st Dan.
Then you have to wait a set period before taking another exam:

A: You have to wait a minimum time between exams. How long exactly depends on the grade you are going for:
Kyu 10-6: 1 day
Kyu 5-1: 1 week
Pre-dan - 5th Dan: 1 month
6th Dan: 1 year

I'm pretty chuffed, I have to say. My hand was shaking a bit at times, but the Birds didn't want to fall off their perches. I'm allowed to try for 5th Dan later today, but even though I already have the Moshi Kame and STB under my belt, I still think the compulsories are just a bit beyond me (when under pressure) at the moment.

But I'm happy with 4th. (For now! :-) )

I'm really impressed with Thorkild and Mathias' skills. It's one thing to see someone on video, but these guys are monsters in the flesh, and both thoroughly deserve their 4th Dans. Well done guys!

Does the beginner start from 1 or 10? and how many tries do you have and what do you need to do to pass the first level? Sorry for all the questions I'm just new to Kendama and I don't get the table :/
Title: Re: Official BKA gradings

10 is the lowest Kyu grade.
You have 10 attempts for each trick, and for 10th Kyu, all you need is 1 Big Cup out of 10 tries.

Donald Grant (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7) is your nearest examiner. Send him a message on the forum, to see if/when he's available.

But you usually don't miss for more than a level, I mean, after doing some self checks.
Anyway, sometimes you are over motivated and focused on an exam and overperform your normal and sometimes you get extra nervous. I can't complain myself, almost made it through 1st dan.

I truly wish I was living nearer to where the event is taking place. Because of where I live, (Georgia, US) it wouldn't really be worth it to drive all the way over there. There's not really anywhere around Atlanta to get a Kendama License. Other than the DamaFest, there aren't really any conventions over here, so I just play with a few friends. So I guess I can't really go. I can't wait to read what people say about it on the forums though! Good luck if you're going!

I'm not sure which event you're referring to, but you can always self-certify yourself.

And we hear the scene in Georgia is pretty big, so you must have quite a few friends to click with, which is always the best thing.

And welcome to the forum!

Ah! Thanks very much - it was fun!  :)

I'd hoped to get to Kyu 2 or possibly 1 but unfortunately didn't quite make it on the day.

The Void was a friendly and fair examiner who pointed out I'd made a slight grip change during Around the World - this meant I needed to land it with a new technique (without the grip change) 'on the fly' as it were! So close a couple of times but not close enough this time!

I really recommend to anyone that they give a grading a go, it's fun to see what you can do when under a bit of pressure and very motivating to your kendama play.

Speaking of which, I've been practicing my improved Around the World and my Moshi Kame this week which meant today I self certified to Kyu 1! Yay :) - just gotta prove it at the next grading ;) (Can't wait :) )

I didn't get a photo of every exam pass, so if I missed you (and I think there are a couple of people who improved that I didn't get), then please PM me. Also, let me know if you can be more specific on your Moshi Kame or STB scores.

Thanks!

BKA exams (http://kendama.co.uk/exam.html) for Pre-Dan and Dan grades have increased in price for 2014.

BUT they have stayed the same for BKA members.

How do you do that? If you have your dan, can you request this?
Good luck on the 6th, that's gonna be a nice certificate collection :-)

Hi Hans,
Were you given a green form in Toulouse when you got your Dan? This is an application form for official JKA certification of your exam pass. There is a fee (dependant on your Dan level), plus you have to join the JKA too (another small fee). Since you're asking, it seems likely you didn't get one. Who was your examiner? I'm sure you can still request a form.

Hi all

Bit of a stupid question really, but regarding the grading table, am i right thinking that the numbers represent how many out of 10 attempts you need to get before you can move to the next trick, the higher number landed the quicker up the table you go?

Also do you have to be a registered BKA member first to be graded?

Thanks

Yes. As explained on http://www.kendama.co.uk/tricks.html, (http://www.kendama.co.uk/tricks.html,) "For any given grade, you have ten attempts to achieve each trick listed the required number of times."
Quotethe higher number landed the quicker up the table you go?
What? No.

No, but it makes it cheaper for the higher grades.

My examiner was K.Cima (although I did my moshikames with Tomoya Mukai). I didn't get a green form. But maybe I'll just try and get it next time around, hopefully for my third dan :-)

Thanks for the info!

Great beginner's workshop today at the 2. Stuttgart Youth Circus Festival (Germany). There were only five participants, but the atmosphere was great. Two were so enthusiastic, that they directly bought their Kendama (SunRise Street).

And four of them took an exam. It was interesting to see how the exam situation stressed the guys. For absolute beginners, they were quite good in the workshop, but once it became serious (and I tried to set a light tone to it), they really got nerves.

Anyway, here are the four new gradees. Congratulations to Gabriele (8th Kyu), Johannes, Maxime, and Victor (6th Kyu).

I love love love that Kendama has proper gradings with lovely certificates. My thrower of a boyfriend is super jealous that he can't get his yo-yo skill levels certified :P

It does confuse me that it can't be done over video, when we live in the age of the internet now. Is it cos of editing? Live video could be a thing, or is the quality in those kind of things just not good enough?

Couldn't find a thread about JKA gradings, so I post this here:

Does anybody know whether it's allowed to do the Moshikame part in a JKA grading with a stringless Kendama and to switch to a normal Kendama later? Or are you required to use the same Kendama for all tricks?

They should fear the BKA - the Moshikame requirements are much harder (120bpm versus "just go nice and smoothly" at JKA) :)
I'm also a little surprised about the discussions in the Facebook KD group. But I think that many of these players are younger and not so fluent in English. They're absolutely great and skilled players who probably know every video by heart, but do not know much about the organisations behind Kendama.
But it's great that a German Kendama community is starting to grow.

It is enforced for 1st Dan on. Kyu-1 does not have the speed requirement, I don't remember how it is for Pre-Dan, but I think it doesn't have the speed requirement either.

For me, they counted MK and also timed it, so yes, they enforced it. Maybe it depends on the examiner.

Ah, dang! The curse of the moshi's strikes again.

Well done on improving your grade though @Jak

It's tough, but you're a great player, I'm sure it won't be long until you progress again - you've got the rest of the tricks up to 2nd Dan pretty much locked down!

Been fun playing with you over the last couple of days. Well done, hope to see you soon.

Good stuff. I really hated them for quite a while but now I kind of like them. You've got to lose yourself in the groove.

Of course this is easier to say when you've got some in the bag.

Surprisingly hard under pressure aren't they?!

Today I run some kyu examinations at the Trinity juggling society.

@KenDogma got 2 Kyu and Emet, our Irish champ, got 5 Kyu.

Of course straight after the exam they were landing the tricks they missed during the exam. Lovely pressure.

I just failed my grading for 2nd Dan (JKA). I only did 253 moshikame. That hurts, but at least I defended my 1st Dan.
After several hours of playing today at a local workshop in Osaka I felt pretty warmed up. I think I somehow lost concentration after my string got tangled and I had to fight to get it free again.
But tomorrow is another day... (tomorrow in a metaphorical sense)

Yes indeed. Although he will probably be beaten to it as he has to wait 6 years before he's allowed to enter!

Very well deserved though.

Thanks guys!
@Kengeaa I've been playing for about 3 years now, so I'm pretty darn chuffed with my new Dan!
@LarsVegas Apparently you have to be a Jappanese adult to even atempt 6th Dan - which is 21. So a six year wait for me.
Six years six Dans

Title: Re: Official BKA gradings
Post by: LarsVegas on 15 August, 2015, 10:13:04
@Dimensions : well, six years is long, but you _can_ wait. To become Japanese is more difficult. But I can't imagine that you have to be Japanese - Void has already tried to get the 6th Dan. But then, maybe he is Japanese and I just don't know ...

Congratulations to

- Johannes Lutz for 3rd Kyu
- Christos Baltzatzis for Pre-Dan
- Martin Klauka for 1st Dan

P.S. I'm such a klutz - don't look at the pictures, I counted the Kyus in the inverse direction  :-[

Thanks for the clarification. As I said I probably wouldn't do this as I seem to be a bit of a purist when it comes to swapping bits of kendama. Apart from beads and strings :)

@John yeah Sulab, Su and his wife were fantastic. Also MJ Suicic who showed us around Kawagoe was great. It was about 38 degrees in Kawagoe that day, my eldest son left his bag on the bus and my youngest son went ape s**t in the heat. Fortunately all ended well with the bag and everyone was very tolerant of my youngest

Neither money nor a certificate. Could be as false as a video.

But sometimes good to have one, or a good copy, from anywhere. Try on."
