Outlink 2014 is a simple video competition for BKA Members (http://kendama.co.uk/contact.html) only.
BKA News - Outlink 2014 (competition) Details (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SmO3wJSyA0#)
On Feb 1st, BKA will post a video of a single trick, with a keyword. (e.g. Big Cup & "Outlink!").
You then have until the end of Feb 14th (GMT) to post a video of yourself in this thread, doing that trick, then saying the keyword. Simple! If you have not posted a video at the end of the time limit, then you are OUT of Outlink.
Then, on Feb 15th, everyone who has posted will go through to the next round. This will be a new trick, with a new keyword. And so we repeat the process. The tricks will get gently harder, and the time limit may come down slightly over time.
To win, you just have to be the last person left still posting videos.
RULES
1. Join this forum (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=register), if you haven't already. (It's free!)
2. Join the BKA Membership scheme (http://kendama.co.uk/contact.html) before Feb 14th to be eligible. (It's cheap! You don't have to be British! Everyone is welcome to join!)
3. Use any competition-size kendama.
4. Make sure you film clearly, preferably outside, or at least in good lighting (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,44.msg11118.html#msg11118).
5. Post your video to this thread.
PRIZE(S)
The prizes will depend on how many people enter the first round. (See video below.) So if you only see a few people entering, then persuade your friends to enter too, for the chance of a better prize for everyone.

But anyway, ill be in!
Similar, but no "lives", and no change of setter. And great!
Sounds like fun. And also a nice way to practice a new trick for a couple of weeks :)
signed up and ready to go! :)
sounds good to me ! im pretty out of practice so look forward to the challenge. That speckled ozora !!!! :o :o :o
Yep, sounds good. I'm in!
Well, that's 5 of you - that should ensure the Shin Fuji at least. :)
Is the time that one has to complete a trick going to accelerate to the point of the time to complete the trick being less than 24 hours? Because I would personally find it difficult to complete a trick when I am sleeping...
Oh, and count me in! (Once I have paid...)
I'm in too!
Getting that BKA membership asap!
@Spirit: We realise there are time zone issues, so we would take that into account. I don't think we'd go below... say, 3 days. But that's a way off yet... we'll see how the competition progresses!
I'm in, too
This could get interesting, count me in!
Here we go. A quirky, but fairly simple one to start. First trick:
BKA Outlink 2014 Trick #01 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMBGtcQ3Uxs#ws)
Remember, the more people who enter the first round, the better the prize!
We will keep the first post in this thread updated with each new trick as it comes along.

Outlink: Trick 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJU_ZqcSXLc#ws)
Kev: Sorry, Rejected. :( It's HORIZONTAL Flying Top, and yours is (or at least appears to be in the video) about 15-20° above. Perhaps borderline, but I'm sure you can do better.
Dimensions: Sorry, also rejected. It looks roughly like you did it, but from this angle, it's not totally clear that it's Horizontal. Reshoot from front-on please.
Sorry to be tough, but hey, it's a competition, and rules is rules. Plus, let this be a lesson to people that it could be risky to put your entry in at the last minute.
Cheers guys.
Edit: To be 100% clear, you are both still in the competition, and are allowed to resubmit. :)
Hey no worries, that's fair.

Thanks all.

But then, neither is your garden, by the looks of it. ;)
Accepted! Cheers.

Yep!
http://youtu.be/t_UBZGwz9LQ (http://youtu.be/t_UBZGwz9LQ)
All rain and ice outside. This is best I could do on lighting at the moment!
Is that stringless?
No, it's my Grain Theory with green kenlab string. Same one I used on the Kendama Concepts edit I posted here a few weeks ago.
See attachment for picture of kendama used.
talincrow: Right, now this is going to seem harsh, but we're going to have to ask you to re-shoot. It's not that we don't believe you, but watching the video back frame by frame, there's not a single frame where we can see any part of the string at all. Given that this is a video contest, it's only fair to the other contestants to ask that we can fully see the trick being done in the video.
Sorry. :-\
Fair enough. It is a contest afterall haha. I'll make sure you can see the string this time.
Quote from: BKA on 04 March, 2014, 16:44:40

;-)
Bizarrely, theobau seems to have got a better resolution than we could. (Maybe the highest res hadn't encoded when we watched it). Okay, the evidence says you're good, talincrow! Stand at ease.
Awesome! Thanks @theobau !!! I filmed it again before I saw the updates on my entry haha. Glad to be moving on to the next round!
Quote from: BKA on 04 March, 2014, 22:58:10(Maybe the highest res hadn't encoded when we watched it).
Ah, yes, the string's quite visible in the 480p version, but only 360p was available to us at the time. Lesson learned - wait for highest res if in doubt!
I'm already doubtng the verticality after editing it, if so count this as a placeholder ;) at least it's in the light I suppose haha!

BKA Outlink 2014 Trick #4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7VFepWOKHM#ws)
More on C-whip: http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,784.0.html (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,784.0.html)
As always, please make sure the trick is fully clearly visible. e.g. No white strings in front of white t-shirts, please. And no dipping below/above the frame. Daylight is your friend. Thanks.
Never actually hammered out how to do this. Alas, it is now the time! C-whip here we go!

Ouch, Guess I finally have to knuckle down and learn this!
Glad I'm not the only c-whip virgin out there!
Just spent about 15 minutes on it (the first 5 were spent whipping the wrong way) and I'm starting to get the hang of it, although I'm sure some of my experience doing whips with yo-yos helped. Should have my video up shortly.
It seems most of us are going to be challenged to learn a new trick :)
I think that is making things more interesting. Always good to try new things.

I have to say that this is a trick I never even tried. It was a bit hard to figure it out, but I'm glad you put it, otherwise I'd have never learned it.
I guess knowing how to do slacks with a diabolo made it easier.

Trying this trick, I really became desperate. I couldn't figure out how to thread the finger into the string. I watched the video for the C-Whip help over and over but couldn't understand what Void is doing. Until I resorted to the approved method: Just copy meticulously the movement. And suddenly it worked. I still don't really understand what's happening, but the success rate is rather nice.
As always, I hope that the lighting is enough. The Kendama sometimes leaves the screen but the trick itself is always visible.

Eek. Deadline tomorrow and not had chance to pick up a kendama since this was set.
Fingers crossed for a chance to learn the trick and film it. :)
LarsVegas jolly good, accepted!
Kev Deadline is the 12th.
Spent quite some time to learn the trick this weekend, got the whip a couple of times and finished it with the airplane catch only once. Hopefully I can get it on camera as soon as possible.

Thank God for my yoyo playing friends. Spent all weekend trying to figure this out, watched/slow-mo every tutorial video Void had (including the one on the kendama app), read Knees, and practiced and practiced and practiced and still couldn't even get close. Met up with my yoyo playing friend yesterday who showed me how to throw and watch for the loop. Landed it 3rd try.
Hope the lighting is good. It's all rain and clouds where i'm at.

Hans: My total footage was like 45min to get some seconds. Just record all the time :)
Regarding the tricks, I fully agree - I'm learning so much new stuff.
For me it was a big Aha! moment... when I realized that it is almost the same as a diabolo slack. Now I can do it like 8/10 times.
But before... I spent lots of time looking at the videos frame by frame, reading knees and staring to my kendama with a confused face.

tricky, you need to go outside to even practice this one. Well thought :)
Very hard, I landed it four or five times, but that's about it. Can't go outside, it's too dark. So i practice inside with the knees already pre-bend.
Hmmm....Seems I have extremely slippery forearms! Does it have to be caught on bare skin? Also, can I use my Mugen Musou?
Bare arms are preferred, yes. Sorry, Musous are slightly larger than competition size, so no.
As a professional pilot I would probably loose my license for that landing ... But nobody got hurt, does it count?

Time to say goodbye ... :'(
I vastly improved my 1-turn aeroplane with #7 and the practice session for #8. But I can't do the arm-bounce 1-turn aeroplane. I tried this continuously for about 90 minutes yesterday evening. All I did was one arm-bounce 1/2-turn aeroplane. As of today, my arm is bruised (see below) and it stings like hell if I try it one more time. It looks so effortlessly in your videos. One day, someone has to show me exactly how to do it.
Anyway, the competition was big fun. I learned so many new tricks and I'll follow it nevertheless and will try to do the new tricks. I'm so happy that I made it that far and wish good luck to all of you.
Big respect to Void for organising the competition. I'll definitely join the next event too. For now I'll go back to Dan- and EKO-practicing
Keep clicking, Lars
@larsvegas it was extremely difficult for me too. The only thing that helped me land it was throwing the ken up in the air (generally above eye level) then bouncing it for the 1-turn airplane. And my arm suffered similar injuries as well...
Trickiest one yet...Almost lost my voice after landing it.

[Mod edit 'cos I'm an idiot]"Yellow card" was just a little joke - you didn't have to redo it. The only thing unclear on the first last video was the first 1-Turn Aeroplane. It was quite blurry because of the lighting, and we had to watch frame-by-frame to see that it was "1-Turn".

Anyway, you're good.

Aeroplane>Slam Aeroplane.
Any number of spins on the way back up is okay, but the string must be vertical and taut at full length on the slam.

Deadline: 22:30GMT March 30th.

Thanks for all the nice feedback - that alone makes this competition a definite win for me. I'm really happy to be part of this. I hope to see some or all of you at a real-life event this year.
And now go slamming that airplane

This trick is incredible (not my particular trick, but the slam trick capability). Using a heavy PLAY kendama made the ken stay pretty controlled through this, lots of potential for some interesting variations!

Yes, I was confused when I saw the trick done on the kendama app (saw it there first), then the one used on the video here in the thread. Oh, sorry you went out like that. But actually, when recording the video, I suddenly realised I had not checked which date was "3 days from now", so I quickly guessed. (Forgetting there were 31 days in March). So actually, you had an extra day on that one anyway. :-P

I do have an injury that has pretty much put my kendama playing on hold for a month or so but I didn't get it from Outlink! I had an incident while hanging an 8 metre wide projector screen. Ouch!
It's getting better slowly, hope it's fixed in time for the week of kendama I have planned at the BJC next week though.

I have to kenfess I can barely ever do one turn of this trick. It's a shame because I really like it! Anyone have any tips? I just can't seem to nail the ken flip; it's always slow and clumsy and ends is bad catches (or no catches at all).
This is a great competition, Void. It pushed me to learn the C-whip and I love the potential of the arm-bounce aeroplane - I can see that one going into different things.

@misterjumpshoe - I see it as two separate movements. A high and slow earth turn (gripping the ken nearer the slip grip than the sarado), and when the ball hits near its peak, ping the ken (harder = more spins), but try and to do this second bit without the ken moving very far from your hand. This makes sure that although the movement can feel frantic, it is in a small and condensed area so it doesn't make the string taught and the ball go astray. The more hang time* the ball has , the more you can flip the ken!
*got this from my basketball days!
kendamatty I had a gander and you have a mighty fast double spin there! Accepted!

Sorry, rejected, for the following reasons:
A) The slap transition looked an awful lot like a contact-push (i.e. a brief carry) transition.
B) the Flying Top was not clearly visible, due to light/quality/too close to camera
C) There was distinct grip-adjustment (finger wiggling) immediately before the Jumping Stick.
I'll see what I can muster up tomorrow, but this is quite a challenge void! I sense my imminent demise...

http://youtu.be/uk2SrWycHzY (http://youtu.be/uk2SrWycHzY)
did I get it?
Hmmm.... Need to watch on a bigger screen, to have a closer look at those fingers...
Decission pending.
oh... I see I'm touching the cups, didn't really think about it till now.
re-do for me :-)
all cool
Ooofff, unlucky, there's a finger in the cup at one point. That's the only thing wrong, so sorry, but rejected. :(
Edit: Ah, you realised it too....
http://youtu.be/FuUZQqckIRw (http://youtu.be/FuUZQqckIRw)
before you say it's a contact push, the tama leaves my hand just after the slap.. doesn't look like it, I know.
I took some screenshots:
otherwise I'll try for a better one.. but damn it's frustrating ;)
BAM!
You're good! Accepted.
I used a vertical striped ball to show the flying top! Their was a slight fumble just before the tama grip change, but it didn't interrupt the flow of the trick (or hopefully violate the rules), so fingers crossed for judgement!

Yep, that's good, accepted! Yes, a slight finger-fumble pre grip-change, but you could argue that it was part of your grip change.
Right then, still the power trio left. Next trick tonight..... if we can figure out what on earth it's going to be!
Number 19: Bucket In The Well > Grip change > 2 Jumping Sticks
(After the grip change, no further grip/string/"wobble" adjustments are allowed.)

Deadline: April 26th, 14:00 GMT
Note the date and time. We've got to put more pressure on you guys now...
Outlink: Trick 19 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjXONLFFCU4#ws)
Making use of the light...
I await your ruthless judgement yet again
Hope it's good
-Rob
Hmmmm.... The string should be fully wound up at the start (until you can't wind further without the sara-do hitting the tama).
However, Void forgot to specify that in the video.
Please re-try, but don't delete the previous video. We'll see how things go.
So it's half accepted?
Currently neither accepted nor rejected. Pending.
Outlink: Trick 19 (just in case...) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv1tUS4YJZI#)
Ok I hope this is good, I have about a 45 minuite window of free time between now and the deadline, so it one of the two will hopefully be good...
-Rob
Low visual quality, but good enough to see.
Accepted.
This competition is so intense! Props to all 3 still in it, y'all are crazy good!
Also I have never seen that Bucket in the Well trick. Super cool Void!

Thanks, Talin. That's one of my originals. So, you haven't seen http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1171.0.html (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1171.0.html) then? (Plug, plug, plug... ;) )
Hey Void!
I was struggling for ages to do this one, blunt spikes do not allow much free spinning.
Wish me luck ;) it certainly was fun either way!

Hmmmmm.... damn, seems we've boxed ourselves into a corner. Watching yours, the thought "that wasn't dipped to knee height, as specified" popped up. But then re-watching Dimension's 2nd vid, neither did he (although he did crouch lower than you).
However, since we have already accepted Dimension's vid, we can't now go back and reject it.
So therefore, we have to accept yours too. :-\
theobau, you'll have to crouch as low as Rob, or lower your hands as low as Matt, to be accepted.
Alright :-)

Accepted!
Next one tomorrow at 14:00GMT, and the deadline will be Sunday 18:00 GMT.
For number 20, the rules change slightly.
The next trick will be a longish sequence. If you complete it, great. But if you don't complete it, you may still be in the competition. Film your attempt(s), and upload your best attempt as Private (JTV) or Unlisted (Youtube), and PM us the link (&PIN for JTV).
(You may submit one attempt, and then later submit a better attempt, if you like.)
Do not post the link in the thread, and do not post anything about how well you did. (You will be disqualified if you do this.)
When the deadline expires, BKA will reveal the best attempt from each remaining player. The player who gets furthest through the sequence with no mistakes will be the winner (2nd furthest: second place). Unless more than one player completes the entire sequence, and then Outlink will continue.
nice twist !!
Copenhagen Sakura Festival is in this weekend too - hope I'll have enough time for this!
I like it! Will it be the endless combo?? Nah, that has been done already, Around Turnbridge wells? Too classic...
These 3 remaining guys are monsters :)

A rather fiendish number 20.

(Showing the Lever Cradle in close-up to the camera is not required.)
No grip changes or string adjustments are allowed (except where they are obviously part of the sequence).
Smoothness of movement may be taken into consideration as a deciding factor (especially in the "extra ball" sequence).

Again, thanks to Void for holding the comp, to all the guest setters for bringing a new perspective of trick stomping to the table, and to a very evil man - mreasyguy - for two hard Outlink tricks and for accepting people's tricks whilst Void was away (having fun ;D)

Thanks, well done to Theo and Matt for doing there best with that last one - kendamatty, I'm going to laugh every time at your atempt haha

Congratulations to Rob, Matt and Theo. It was exciting to see how fast you always got those very difficult sequences.
On a side note: My personal awards for most entertaining videos go to kendamatty and s070s - you made me laugh several times.

I guess we did pretty well too kendamatty - see you in denmark?
Rob and Matt, your prizes will be delivered on Sunday. Theo, by post.
A little boost given to 2nd & 3rd place, 'cos they earned it.

congrets to the winners !! ( i see three winners ) and everybuddy a big thnx .. 'You all rock harder then ad......'
mr. void ... this was pretty cool and thanks !
Cheers guys, glad you all enjoyed it. If only 5 more people had entered, we could have given away an even nicer prize..... :-/
Void do you plan on doing another game of outlink?
@theobau yes see you in Denmark, the battle shall continue again ;)
@dimensions haha indeed Rob! Based on your performance in outlink I feel I have a good challenger for the bounty... also I have just developed a blood blister on my hand from this outlink comp, fingers crossed for a goodun at the weekend if ut heals in time!
And thanks for the spicing up of the prizes Void, blooming generous that man!
My lunchtimes at work without this comp certainly feel a tad more dull now...

There's quite a big clue in this thread's title.
It's a surprising amount of work to run, so not this year. There's always something going on in the forum though. Done Endless#76 yet? :) Watch out for KCC 27.
I haven't done endless #76 it's very difficult with the same hand!
