It seems to give a little extra time in the pattern. It took me a while, but just getting on the practice grind got me from one to two juggles (2 to 4 catches) to Big Cup.
Thinking of the two columns that the ball and ken travel up and down in, I find that I angle the ken outwards a little bit. Something like...

Of course, getting juggles to Spike is considerably harder, as it requires precise control of the ball...
