This trick is the best thing to watch people try and do and the worst thing to practice doing.I hate it so this thread is an attempt to conquer it once and for all! Tips and tricks welcome!

After some thought it I think it has 5 distinct steps

1. The hang
2. The throw
3. The pirouette
4. The spot
5. The catch

At the moment this is my thoughts on each:

1. Hanging so the tama is a few mm just off the sorado
2. Throwing so the kendama straightens up together and the tama doesn't fly off
3. Pirouetting to my left on the ball of my left foot
4. Cross eyed???
5. Catch the ken with my right hand with a bit of a spiking motion to keep the tama on.

I've found I can practice 1, 2 and 5 by throwing closing my eyes and trying to catch, and avoiding the nauseating spin.

4 is where I'm struggling the most. Any dancers/ gymnast/ jugglers with any tips?

Forget about the kendama. Just practice your pirouettes.
Make sure you are spinning around as upright as you can. (Vertical rod through your spine)
Your head should be the last part of your body to start turning, but the first to arrive back at the front. This means you can stay watching the kd longer, and start watching it again earlier.

Practice without the kendama, spotting a tree/picture/wall.

Get your pirouettes nailed down first. THEN add kendama.
