Oh my!

Well done mate, great job. That's a pretty fast pace you did it at too.
I note you have quite a high penguin... maybe that's where I was going wrong.

Right then, now do it without any of that moving-the-string-with-your-other-hand nonsense!  :P

Post by: GbH on 01 November, 2011, 22:43:19
Wow.  That was a cool surprise.  Well done, indeed.

I note, with some amusement, how the stress was starting to show towards the end!  Isn't it strange how such a simple toy can cause so much tension?

So, can you do it with your other hand, too?     8)

Wow. I can't believe somebody's finally done it, a trick so hard that it was actually a joke. Well done.

Post by: Peter on 02 November, 2011, 07:38:19
Congratulation! Seriously, I amtrying this trick for three months now and thought that it would need a year to master. Now you have done it!

Very great!

Post by: Dave on 02 November, 2011, 18:24:08
Thanks for your comments guys.
@guy I think after the penguin section the stress level doubles after each move. So by the end of it my chest was heaving!!!

Mind you the good thing about doing it on film is that I never have to do it again!!!!!! ;)

Post by: orinoco on 02 November, 2011, 19:40:07
Thanks for the nice surprise in my inbox this evening. As mentioned on JTV I can confirm that no one else has even claimed to have completed the trick, let alone provided evidence.

Well done Dave, that is really amazing!

I completely agree about the stress increasing exponentially if you get passed the penguin section!
Title: Re: Around Tunbridge Wells
Post by: SamB on 02 November, 2011, 20:50:15
That's ridiculous Dave well done! Really unbelievable!
Surely this'll evolve into some nth dan trick at the JKA now we know it's possible[nb]Speed trick C???[/nb].

So who's next? What's next?!
Title: Re: Around Tunbridge Wells
Post by: Dave on 03 November, 2011, 06:47:48
I doubt it would be made part of a competition as its just too long. The indevidual sections yes but not the whole thing.

Thanks orin it's great to hear I'm the first to land it!!!!!

The thing with it is that each section is not hard on its own but strung together are REALLY challenging.

Good luck to anyone trying this an the key is to learn penguin spike properly.

Dave

Thanks!
Absolutely not overreacting, I've been practicing on and off for about a week and it took rather a long time in the kitchen last night!
Dave and I have done it on video, I think Matty and Johnny Malcolm have got it off camera as well.

Awesome work Sam! Congrats. I shall have to keep cracking away at it until I get it too.

By the way, I may have forgotten to mention when I sold it to you that that walnut Jupiter Sunrise has magic powers... ;)

Well done again.

Just some tips if you are going to try it:

Penguin <-> small cup is like a backhand moshi kame.
Penguin <-> base cup is a big move but I think of it it like base cup is low and penguin is high so you go high to low, or low to high, they aren't on the same level.
Penguin -> spike is the hardest move so practice that.
There are A LOT of earth turns so you have to be really consistent with those (a good smooth sharp spike is helpful here).
Getting the string twisted up is a real pain, especially later on after a few earth turns, so start with nothing twisted at all, and try to not spin the ball at all between the cup catches so you can keep minimal twisting for when you're up to the last two sections (HOLE CONTROL). A lot of my fails were on the last section where the string got all caught up and it affects the ball rotation.

And obviously... KNEES! It's amazing what poor throws can be caught just by getting low.

Like Dave said before the great thing is now I have it on record I don't have to do it again! Good luck!

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but what is a Penguin? I tried to Google it but I couldn't find an answer.
Title: Re: Around Tunbridge Wells
Post by: br4d24 on 28 February, 2013, 09:58:34
pretty sure its like a backhanded base cup.

lol i used to do all my base cup catches like that until i noticed in edits i was doing it differently than everyone else. Now im pretty good at both, doing the whole gravity scoop thing from backhand basecup to forehand basecup is pretty slick.
Title: Re: Around Tunbridge Wells
Post by: BKA on 28 February, 2013, 13:04:07
@Mr Squirrel: Hold out your hand with your thumb upwards, palm facing across your body. Now start to rotate your hand/forearm so that the palm starts to face downwards. Keep going until the thumb is downwards, then turn a little bit more (your elbow should now have risen up) so that your thumb and palm are both pointing outside, away from your body. That is Penguin position. It is named for the style of catch used in juggling in the same position (http://www.twjc.co.uk/tut029.html) (except the juggling catch is usually done lower, with the arms straighter).
(Alternative explanation: That catch they're all doing in the video! ;-) )

Awesome video indeed! Its always fun watching The Void play, he has a much more "old school" way of playing (or whatever you wanna call it). Always refreshing after watching the newer kendama greats.

I think tomorrow will be day one of me trying to nail this :) I might have a slight advantage with the penguins! Funny story but when i first started playing i always caught base cup like that; the regular way felt odd using a big performer. I can do both ways now but the penguin is deff more difficult with a regular dama.

The Void certainly has a very precise, meticulous playing style; I imagine that's what makes a 2-time BKA champ, and I'm sure it helps a lot with the old consistency http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,209.75.html (http://www.kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,209.75.html)

Congratulations, Void, thanks for the inspiring look of wonder/terror/disbelief/triumph on the final catch!

Title: Re: Around Tunbridge Wells
Post by: The Void on 14 March, 2013, 23:10:16
@Dimensions If you break it up into the six sections, there's a logic to each part. Once it's in your head, it's easy to remember.
@Sam Yeah, my heart sank a little when I saw the last hole position, but I just damn well wasn't going to fail on 56, no way!
@milky He he, cheers, you're welcome. As for meticulous, yeah, that's probably how I go about cracking challenges, whether they be endurances, kccs or tricklists. I wrote this after the 2008 BKC:

Those are both amazing!

I was thinking the other day about practice regimens and that Around Tunbridge Wells, and its more challenging variants, offer excellent routes to hole control / spiking and general basics / essentials / chops.

What do you think?

Is ATW the ultimate development / practice tool for better (more frequent and more accurate) spiking / general control?

If not, what other sequences / routines do you use?
Title: Re: Around Tunbridge Wells

quite insane. I found practicing ATW to have improved my general home control a lot, although I only managed to get as far as the penguin cups.

Hey Kev, interesting question. Since meeting Rolf Ganer this year, I've been really into doing rounds of Follow with people (just building up very simple trick lines), and just trying to keep everything tight but still flowy, and if anything, I just *fluff* the easy stuff through carelessness a lot less than I used to. As with Speed Trick B, I tend to get irrationally very uptight when at the later stages of ATW, but I still use it as part of my training routine, especially when on the move (you can get a great 'stepping' flow into it if you try).

I think these videos are proof that ATW is not in any way 'ultimate', though the sequence of tricks and the way the pattern develops is quite eloquent. Still, I have played very long games of Follow, up to about 35 tricks in one line, where the players felt so familiar with the line it was hard not to think of it as a second ATW.

Post by: The Void on 02 September, 2015, 16:22:55
35?!! It's surely become as much a test of memory as kendama skill by then. ;)
We had some nice games of Follow at Kendama Camp, but I'd guess we didn't get beyond a dozen moves at max.
