Don't try to snatch the Kendama with your thumb because it puts to much pressure on it and it mostly pops out and/or flys away. My best tip is to try and lunar the side of the Tama with your thumb already in position and then gently trap it as it connects. And it goes without saying...

..knees ;)

An easy way I learned this trick is start by holding your kendama in the thumb trap position...(tama grip->with thumb trap on the big cup) once you got a good feeling of holding the ken with your thumb, let go of it while keeping your thumb stretched out. So you should be in a modified tama grip (holding the tama with your thumb stretched out) then all you have to do is pull the ken up as still and straight as possible! Once the ken reaches to a certain point (practice to find that point) you just grab it with your outstretched thumb. I dont know if that made any sense but good luck in mastering the trick!
