Title: Kendama Consistency Challenge #31: There be Pirates
Post by: shalafi on 06 January, 2015, 13:52:40
All hands hoay! This is Kendama Consistency Challenge #31: There be Pirates.

This ladder is to be performed one-eyed. To your confort (and to get in character) you can wear a patch instead of cover your eye with your hand.

Other complements to get into character like pirate flags, hats, parrots or holding knifes between the teeth are appreciated, but by no means mandatory.

The "real pirate" is not only one-eyed, but also one-legged. So, if someone completes the ladder one eyed, there will be a period of 48 hours during which another Pirate can do it one-eyed and one-legged. Again, for confort, you can rest your leg on a chair, although a wooden leg is much cooler.

Of course you can go for one-eye, one-leg straight away.

No string adjustments during each of the tricks are allowed.

So, for the tricks, I think you'd spot the theme.

1. Lighthouse (every pirate ship needs one every now and then)
2. Captain hook
3. Arrrround the Village
4. Arrrround the Prefecture
5. Arrrround Japan
6. Arrrround The World
7. Arrrround Europe
8. Arrrround the Cosmos
9. Arrrround the USA
10. Arrrround Turnbridge Wells <- Just kidding here.

Booty: The winner will get a small green tiger kendama (stringed for left handed) with a replacement string and a 3D printed tama (very light, not too slippery).

Good luck everyone.

Depth perception is under-rated!

I can easily get this done in <30 minutes of filming, probably a lot sooner :)

What's "Captain Hook"?

Post by: shalafi on 01 February, 2015, 17:25:13
It's from tama grip, pull up to hold the ken with the base cup on your index finger, then in. I believe it's a Donald invention.

I'll make a video later on to show it.

Is #2 from an aeroplane position or a straight pull up?

I think there's quite a big clue here:

Yes, it is just from the pull up. Like that one

I'm sorry, but going to be picky here and say no. Actually I should have said "no string adjustments" but I thought it was obvious. Is it ok to wave the kendama to get the string out, but not to do the adjustment with the other hand.

Also, it is nicer to see the ladder without any miss, that goes for the failed but unrequested lighthouse somersault.

That being said, I love the Hat + Patch, and I'm sure you can do it again.

OK no problem but I don't think I'll try it again because One-eye based tricks are not really fun imo and I'm working on my 6th edit right now. But I wanted to try for a couple minutes because I look cool with a boxer on my head  ;D

If you have some more time, please try again. I tried to make it not too hard so more people wanted to try it out.

I tried yesterday (cold outside, and breezy) and today (inside.... no excuses) for a little while. I find it pretty hard 1-eyed. My best run so far is to #3. I'm impressed by both Dadooh's run and shalafi's general play if this is what it's like for him all the time!

Honestly it took me 10 minutes to get it and I think I could do it again without trying too hard but since I actually failed, I'll let people a chance to get it. If nobody does, in a few weeks, I'll do it again  ;)

Was thinking the same; I find one-eyed stuf seriously challenging, and I thought, it's probably not an excuse to mention eyesight, as shalafi wears glasses most of the time! Fair play to you guys. Not gotten very far with this one yet.

I find catching in the cups rather easy. However, spiking is something completely different. I feel like the biggest klutz of all. Respect to shalafi and all the others who can do this.

I got to #6 tonight. Getting better! Also, this list inspired me to record a silly trick, which I'll Instagram tomorrow.

I find the Earth Turns specially tricky, I'm wondering if it is the same for everyone.

We love silly tricks.

Captain Cook is definitely the hardest trick in this list imo.

Just for clarification:

Captain Cook: (http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/upfromaustralia/captaincook.jpg)

Captain Hook: (http://comictrash.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Hook-walt-disney-300x224.jpg)

Both were indeed most definitely very merciless pirates and true 'baddies'. Actually, the only real difference I can see is that Captain Hook wasn't a white supremacist. At least not in the version I remember.

LOL love the clarification. For the record, there's one captain hook movie with people instead of animation.

I've got a cold. I had a brief go at this again today, but my knee wasn't happy about it, and I lost energy quickly. Like Lars, I find the Spikes/Ins hardest.

I tried... coudnt even land the lighthouse... (just consistently learned normal lighthouses yesterday maybe thats why :/)

Just to keep the spirit up. I'm practicing for days now. That's how far I get ... I can do the tricks up to Around the Cosmos with a probability higher than 50%. But I can't get past Captain Hook. And I didn't show that it takes me about 50 tries to get one lighthouse into balance. Mostly I knock the base away, land on my hand or the ken falls on the tama from too high above.

Shalafi ... my highest respect

I'm the opposite of you, Lars: the first 2 are reasonably fine, but it gets much harder from there on. I had another go tonight, but didn't get past 3.

I gave it a run this afternoon (just for fun) during a work break and I got as far as Around the World (#6) in 10 minutes.

I will try again later, with proper warm up.

I play on joining in on this one very soon!

Practiced a little at work yesterday...didn't think the one eye part would make things so difficult! :D

These competitions usually expire after 30 days, so I recommend not slacking off ;-)

So, time's up!

Since there was "almost"a winner. I'm willing to revert the decision and crown Dadooh as the winner.

But for that I'd like him to do an appeal in Pirate speech. How does it sound?

Sorry but I can't accept it. As you said my entry wasn't legitimate because I touched the string. I think that a new challenge has to be set by the BKA.

Well, there we have it. That's noble of you, Dadooh.

Okay, BKA will take over again. But we'll have a short break first.
Now, everyone go and try the next Endless Combo trick! :)

Ok then. We leave the Captain role in the hands of the BKA.
