Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced will be Speedtrick divisions. A small group of players lines up and attempts the tricks one by one. Once a trick is landed successfully, the player can go to the next trick. The fastest player in the group goes on to the next round.
Players compete 1-on-1 in a knockout fashion. A random trick is drawn. Each player than has one chance to land it. If only one player succeeds, he gets a point. If both/neither succeed, nobody gets a point. If no points are awarded after each player has had three tries, a new trick is drawn. First player to get 2 points (3 points in the semifinals / 5 points in the finals) moves to the next round.
Tricks 1-21 will be used from round 1 up to quarterfinals
Tricks 19-27 will be used for semifinals and finals

Ah, well, if you're going to cheat, and use your brain.... :-/
I've added them to the first post.
Cripes. Last year's hit rate was 40%. Good luck everyone.
I'm going to comment here instead of facebook since it is going to be slightly long.
I see this trend on other competitions and is something I think will hard the Kendama community on the long run, and I'm talking about the beginners division.
It is ok to keep pushing the bar further on Pro, and Advanced, I think Intermediate and beginners should not push the bar, they are meant for people to get into Kendama, they are meant for people that are starting (beginners) and for people that starts the difficulty of the tricks should not be raised, otherwise it means that being a beginner now is way harder than being a beginner 3-5 years ago. That's not fair, that demotivates players and scares potential people to join and try.
I think beginners should contain tricks that you can land in your first days of practice (big difference between landing a lighthouse once and landing one in three) so a new player can feel that most of the tricks can be landed and with practice, they could be landed with enough consistency.
That's why I think a ladder is the best way for beginners and not a speed trick list. You keep going up the ladder until you miss. Fine, if there's a trick you can't land yet, that's where you stop.
On a speed trick ladder, if there's a trick you can't land, you get stuck there. That happened to me on Advanced a few years ago, I could land all the tricks with reasonable consistency except one, that trick alone could take me 10 minutes. Obviously I did not joined that division. Now put yourself on the shoes of a beginner that can't do a downspike. It is a trick that took me a while to get along with. On a ladder, that's fine, on a speed trick list, that's another story.
Mind you, falling down is a 3-in-10 trick for 1st Dan. Are we expecting beginners to be of the level of a 1st Dan now? I think we should aim at Kyu 1 level.
I think that in the heat of pushing the tricks and making it fun for the pros we're neglecting the people that is just starting.
Anyway, that's just my opinion, It is a question of priorities when designing an event. A speed trick list could be more fun for spectators but less fun to participate. Who are you designing the event for is the decision of the organizers. All I'm saying is that I have other priorities when designing events and trying to lay out my PoV here.

The difficulty is significantly higher compared to last year. The result of letting loose some of the rulez (by the Red Hand of Democracy). But last year's Czech Open was also significantly more difficult than EKO, and I think the success rate was not worse. We will see what happens.
@shalafi - you might be right about the beginners section being a bit too difficult for a complete beginner who picks up a dama at the EJC. And I have a tendency to agree with you. At the same time, it is 3 months before the EKO. Plenty of time to practice 9 tricks. I don't agree with your ladder/speedtrick distinction. Ladder, like you describe it, is completely merciless - you make one mistake, end of story. You got stuck in the speedtrick on a single trick - you would get eliminated in the ladder on the same trick - I don't see a difference. The speedtrick gives you the option of another try. Nobody forces you to a higher speed. Nice and easy most often does it.

As I said, that was just my opinion. I appreciate the thought you put into the reply.
While it is true that there is 3 months to EKO, it is usually the case that some people gets interested during EJC or, as it happens to me, there are jugglers that only play kendama every now and then and still may have fun entering a competition. This is what I've seen on the IKO for 3 years, but again, Ireland is quite a small sample.
On the ladder Vs. speed trick. I see your point on them being similar, but while on a ladder I know I can get to certain point and that's it, I need to complete the speed ladder for it to count.
The difference is, by the time I entered the EKO for the first time, I hadn't landed a single lighthouse, which was the last trick of beginners, but I entered anyway because I could do almost all the other tricks. If it was a speed trick list, I could not have completed it, not in 5 minutes, not in 10, not in 30, I knew that, and I would not have entered.
I'm not claiming that that is what happens to everyone, but there is a big difference when you know you can't land a certain trick. Yes, ladders are merciless, but speed trick lists require you to land all the tricks, they are more demanding.
Anyway, just my 2 cents.
As I'm able to make it to bko for the first time this year, I feel that I can relate to this.
When I first got a kendama, despite not being able to make it to bko I used the beginner trick list and the timescale to the comp as my practice goals. It was really fun.
Knowing that I could attend this year I was excited about seeing what the new lists would be, and felt like I might have a crack at the intermediate level, as I felt confident that I should be comfortable with what would be released for beginners.
When they were released I admit it got me a little disheartened as the jump up seemed quite steep for me. I am entering the beginner level this year, and can say that the speed ladder seems to be a great way to start.
A lot of people starting might be able to land tricks but not first time, so the chance to continue until you complete the list I think is less daunting than one go and you're out, especially after you put in practice and you have first time nerves etc.

I guess it depends on each person. I feel better without the time pressure, but I can see how other people works better without the pressure of only a few tries.

I can see arguments either way for ladder or speed. But I agree with shalafi about the level of tricks in Beginners. A beginner who has practised hard for three months isn't a beginner anymore! :-)
I can see all the points you are raising. At the same time, I feel the general status among the beginners (real or false) is that they are shy to compete - I see it at the Prague kendama battles all the time. That being said, we (hereinafter meaning "Maico, Dario and me", unless specified otherwise) believe that the chance of a random juggler picking up a dama at the EJC and actually WANTING to compete after fiddling with the thing for three days is very low. I have suggested a Noob/Rookie list of 6 tricks from the "starter pack", I was shut down. Maybe this issue will be reopened?
We also believe that since this is the EUROPEAN open, not a small local affair, people need to push themselves, and as
@johndmc said, go for the closest more difficult thing compared to their skill level. If people are no longer beginners after going at it for three months, they can join a tougher division - all the better in my view - it will push them and get hyped. Not everybody, of course. Last point, if you travel to EJC with the aim to compete, you have plenty of time to ascertain your skill and practice accordingly.
Every coin has two sides, even
@shalafi 's 2 cent piece ;)
For comparison, here are two tricklists for the joint 2017 Czech and Slovak Kendama Championships (I am not sure, but it will be 1 on 1 knock out in all divisions):
Kids of 10 years and below
1 Velký pohárek (Big cup)
2 Malý pohárek (Small cup)
3 Střední pohárek (Base cup)
4 Svíčka (Candle)
5 Letadlo (Airplane)
6 Napíchnutí (Spike)
7 Swing in
8 Okolo japonska (Around Japan)
9 Okolo světa (Around World)
10 Maják (Lighthouse)
Beginners
1 Swing to candle
2 Around prefecture
3 Orbit
4 Jumping stick
5 Falling
6 Slip on stick
7 Knee bounce to big cup
8 Flying top
9 Earth turn
10 Hanging spike
About the beginners bring shy, what my experience shows is that two IKOs run within the Dublin circus festival got 10 and 12 players, only 2 of them in advanced. This year it was a standalone event, only 5 people showed up, all entered advanced.
The level of interest required for going to a Kendama event takes the non-engaged people out. I'm sure we saw a similar trend on the BKO and EKO when they stopped being part of the BJC and EJC.
If an event is inside a bigger juggler event we should facilitate the entry for beginners, on a standalone event you can push the bar higher.
Just my opinion based on my -limited- experience running events.

Hmmm, I've run EKOs at EJCs and I see
exactly this happening, especially if there's been a workshop. Jugglers are especially open to picking up a new skill-toy. If you look back at the Beginner divisions from EJCs, most are "newbies from the week". Here are a few people who did exactly that:
2010
Raul —> Later was Spanish Champion x3, ran 3 Irish Championships (so far)
Johnny > Later was European Champion
Marko -> Later was Finnish Champion, twice
2011
Petra -> Later was German Champion
...so maybe it's worth trying to attract the nervous noobs to compete?
Well, anyway, you've made your choice, okay, let's see how it goes, and I hope it goes well. :)

Thank you Void :) I think I will reopen this topic with the guys later. Since it seems that the Newbie section will be most relevant for people who first pick up playing kendama on site, this has time to deal with later. I have already proposed an easy short tricklist as well.
On another note, the NEW WEBSITE is going LIVE today!!! It already is, actually... Live, I mean... go check it out and register, it will help us a bunch (you can modify the details later). There are some glitches still, we are fixing them as we speak. :)

I am staying in a tent on site, like last year. Don't know how many people will show up... So far, only a handful have registered on the kendama-open.eu website.
No, the trick lists weren't released in time for my practice timescale, so I won't be entering.
I'm camping too (if bringing a tent is an issue, I have a 4-man), but will be arriving Monday

Is it expensive? I recall Poland and Lublin being quite cheap back when the last EJC was there.

Up to you, really ;)
*DOUBLE POST ALERT*
1. Note that there are notes on 3 tricks in the pro division! Very important! The affected tricks are printed blue on kendama-open.eu and you will see the notes upon clicking on the respective trick.
2. European Cup (Gloken style; #gleko for short) tricklist is finally public! Should have been a great deal sooner, I know... :-/ Videos coming soon! Watch the EKO facebook page and kendama-open.eu - I will try to put the links here as well, but I may be lagging. If there are any questions, ask away. Note: LEVEL 1 does not necessarily mean beginner ;) We could only work with what people sent us...

EDIT: slight update of the tricklist - downspike down Earth turn moved from level 5 to level 2 in the exchange of reverse spacewalk swapspike
@jakub.zahumensky Re "Allowed kendamas"... clarity please:
"In all divisions, you are free to use any kendama of your choice as long as it fits these dimension limits: ken height - maximum? 17 cm; sarado width? - maximum? 7.5 cm; base bugger me, really? cup maximum? internal?/external? diameter?- 4.5 cm. All JKA and BKA approved kendamas satisfy this neatly, as does a Mugen Musou."
Also, I assume that any size tama is permitted too? ^_^

Yes, those are maximum dimensions (i.e. anything smaller than... people can use a mini as far as I am concerned). So yeah, ken no higher than 17 cm. Sarado not wider than 7.5 cm. Base cup external diameter (as measured in the widest part of the ken, technically, if we want to go nit-picking) no bigger than 4.5 cm (You may be surprised, but i have one dama with base cup bigger than big cup.). Tamas of any size is the current state of the matter.
Would "fit within these dimension limits" make it clearer that those are maximum dimensions? I thought it was quite clear from the description as it is.
I know you worked with the tricks you were sent, but the difficulty of the gloken style cup is quite higher than the one on the real gloken cup. Specially on the lower levels.

Well, you should have sent us some, then ;) Anyway, I am now watching the videos and yes, of course, our level 1 corresponds in difficulty to KWC level 3. BUT, KWC level 10 (not even the highest level, corresponding to EKO levels 8-9) is mental, definitely harder than EKO level 10. KWC level 4 corresponds to EKO levels 3-4, I find the difficulty more or less the same.
So yeah, for EKO levels 1-3 you're right, but then the tricks don't get as hard as at the KWC. Also consider that vast majority of the tricks came from European players, so it's not like some outside force is at play here - from European players for European players. Anyway, the beauty of this format is that everybody can pick the tricks they like.
PS for Void: I ruled the ken games at the Kendama Clash in Berlin last weekend with tap tornado lighthouses and candle downspikes :D Neat tricks, both of them, thank you for introducing them to me (one way or another - outlink or outlink, right?) - Cooper Eddy got a letter on each :D. And of course the forearm bounces, hehe

Well done, and congrats. Candle>Fast Hand Stab was set by Yoda in the Endless Combo waaaaay back. No idea if I'd done it earlier or not. Glad you like the Tap Tornado LH, and that it foxed people.

Yes, he does. And you suppose correctly. In his original video file, he said double, nothing about direction. I think he always goes reverse for some reason.

Tagging some Poles from the member map. Hey guys, you know EKO's in Poland (http://kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3008.0.html) again this year?

Because we have decided to make it as a part of the EJC (ejc2017.org) again this year. For next year, *SPOILER ALERT* Barcelona seems to be getting momentum as a viable option. Will that be any cheaper? ;)

I was trying to make a point. Seems all we are hearing from Polish players is that it's expensive to go to the EKO this year. The thing is, this is the cheapest possibility for them to go to the EKO. Ever.

I wasn't neither serious nor joking. It was a legitimate question for
@Kapi and other Polish players.
Also, when I say Barcelona, I don't necessarily mean Las Ramblas, por supuesto ;) I am thinking more about a facility in reasonable vicinity where we could have the camp and then make a day trip to Barcelona, for example. And have the event somewhere on the edge of the city.

Are there any japanese players (Dan examinators ) comming this year>??
I will be doing JKA exams at some point. I heard the JKA will not be sending anyone this year. I don't know if Tajima-san is coming "as JKA", or just as himself.

Hey guys! The EKO is upon us! YAY! We are looking for people to help judge:
- beginners, intermediate and advanced (4-5 judges each, one per contestant on stage)
- pro (1-2 judges)
- freestyle (3 judges)
- 7-to-spike (3 judges)
- European Cup (3-4 judges).
Who's up for it? :)
Judges will rotate, so don't worry about spending the whole day in the chair :) If you want to judge more than one event, you are more than welcome and we will more than grateful :)

Also, don't miss out on the Highline festival that will take place in Lublin at the same time as the EJC! Admission for EJC participants for 60 zloty.

Do you mean ordering within the tricklist? What order would you have used? I wanted to go from easiest to hardest, with a spike at the end.

That's a contradiction. :)
BC
Candle
Spike
Aeroplane
Moshi x 4
Lighthouse
Tricky to know where to place the Moshi, but the others are in standard Kyu order.
Is this a Ladder, or a Speed List?

life is full of paradoxes ;) it is a speedtrick - I like the idea that you get a second chance when you mess up
If it's a Speed List, I guess the order doesn't matter so much. Cool.

That would be great! Thanks

I realised that the Kendama World Cup is this weekend, just 5 days sooner than the EKO, so that may explain their absence.
Gradings!
Akira will be arriving on Thursday morning. :-)
Small SATURDAY schedule adjustment: The EU cup will be held 10:00-14:00 instead of the planned 12:00-17:00. Please, be punctual, as we have to be done by 14:00. They put on an extra show that starts at 15:00.
I am really sorry about this, I was looking forward to getting more sleep on Saturday as well...

Thanks
@jakub.zahumensky @Maicodama &
@Doppia_D89 for taking on the EKO. I know how much work it is, and I appreciate all your time & effort.
Congrats to everyone who competed with a standard competition-sized kendama at the Enlarged Kendama Open - I was impressed by your skills.
Turn-out was slightly down. I think this is probably due to the same factor that is observed at EJCs: The "further from the middle" of Western Europe you are, the lower the turnout. Well, it's good to move the competition around Europe, so fair enough.
The option of having the venue open to the pubic sounded like a great idea. Unfortunately, it wasn't really in a spot where people would just wander past, so we didn't get many public spectators. Also, the fact that the venue was just outside of the EJC campus meant we didn't get many jugglers coming to watch either. An unfortunate combination of factors that was no-one's fault really. Oh well.
These factors also explained (I think) why there were no competitors in Noob division.
The Pro list was too hard.
Well done on the tough job of judging,
@jakub.zahumensky . Yes, I questioned one of your judgements, but you explained your reasoning and I immediately accepted it. Consistency and clarity of judging is essential.
Well done on microphone enthusiasm
@Maicodama . But I was sad to see the timekeeping lessons from BKO weren't learned. Every "5" minute break loses audience and energy. No time for Unicorns and Candle battles. Gerronwivit! ;)
7 To Spike heats were too long. They should be to 4 or 5 points, not 7. The rule-tweak to stop the King getting easy points was good.
Glad I finally got to see a Kendama Cup format live. I think it worked well, and was fun to watch.
It was good to hang out with as many of the players as I could, and meet new people too. The fact that I was working for 7 of the 9 EJC days meant I didn't get to jam as much as would have liked with you all, or run more grading exams. Sorry for that, but at least I got to be there.
Sad to see once again that so many kendama players are stinking[nb]I use this word literally.[/nb] drug addicts. Stupid, sad, and a terrible example. You deserve to die of lung cancer. I'm not joking[nb]I probably deserve to die of arrogance or judgementalism, but since they're not known killers, I probably won't.[/nb]. All the more heartbreaking since you lot seem to otherwise be a great bunch of people.
@Mirek said to me that he thought the EKO should go to Romania next year. Seems like a good suggestion, as that seems to be where the most kendama players are right now. There'd be a good turnout, if nothing else!
Thank you to all the sponsors for your continued support of the EKO.
