@johndmc That kendama looks like it is above competition sized - so I should be rejecting your entry. But... it is the first trick of the competition, and an easy one, I'm sure you could do it again if I asked you to and your keen enough to apply. So for this once I will
accept your entry.
But of course, next time I will expect a standard, competition sized kendama please.

Hi Dimensions, thank you for the benefit of the doubt. I did it with a Keyaki Ozora which I believe is standard size. It might be the way I angled my phone when recording that made it look out of proportion. However I can re-do it if needed but won't be until later tonight after cut off. Let me know if you want me to. :)
Keyaki Ozora is definitely competition size mate!!

The only times I could practice the trick is when the little ones were sleeping, and then I had to be extra careful to not make much sound, so at the end I didn't practice enough.
Good luck to the rest of the people in.

But saying all that, I'm confident you can do it all again

I'm determined to get it right, so you may get a random video from me down the line, but sadly I won't make cut off today. Enjoy the rest of Outlink everyone
Hard luck, @johndmc . :( But what is this "not filming at the time" you speak of? I am unfamiliar with the concept. ^_^
Haha, its certainly taught me a lesson for certain. Always have the camera rolling, and back up often to free up valuable trick footage space [emoji31] [emoji6]

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm sitting alone in front of my screen and I'm laughing ... I was really sweating, I was puffing more than you think ... but it's so much fun, especially with this community.
And the winner's going to be someone else, but I'll fight

@Dimensions is the man! This is my fourth year of Outlink and I love it. I'm so happy that Dimensions continues to manage the competition.

@fiddletriks The string slap was good, followed up by a very casual 3-second count. As I said, you are allowed to grip change after the tradespike, but what got me is the string moving after, but that isn't changing your grip so that's good to. After were the horizontal earths, the low camera angle made it a little difficult to tell but it looks like the earths are just in my limit. The good thing for you is that the trick is...

@Niggy Hmmm... The string slap was fine, but the LH count down seemed a little rushed and your body movement made me question the legitimacy of this. I came to this conclusion: it was only
just 3 seconds, and this was acceptable due to your hand not moving despite your body swaying throughout.
My next point of concern was the horizontal earth turns, your first was
just within 20 degrees but... your second was spiked at almost 45 degs. above the limit.
I can tell you spent a long time on this trick and I am sorry, but I'm going to have to reject this entry. But I'm sure you can do it again :)

I'm out (for the moment). But what did I achieve in round 4:
- String-slap 1-turn Lighthouse + 3sec hold
- Tradespike > Earth-turn backward > Earth-turn forward
- Earth-turn forward > Earth-turn sideways
- Earth-turn sideways reverse
As I only could do normal earth-turn before, I'm quite happy with that. Still, I'm a little bit sad, to quit already in round 4. The difficulty really rises from year to year...
BUT: I'll try hard to get back in - that's a great idea. Again, I can do none of these tricks, so being among the first two is even harder ... I'll have a try ... can't quit now.
Loving it

I'm awful at whirlwinds. It's going to take me a few days to get this one, I think. Will be totally worthwhile though, always wanted to be more consistent with them - watch this space...
@Dimensions thank you doood looking g forward to the next!
@John you can do this. Do what I do, start extremely low and make every movement as dramatic as possible . The most important part is learning how to to hold the ken by the sword keeping your fingers away from the cups, and to practise doing those really slow and high earth turns, once you do then smash a whirle :):) thanks for the encouragement man! I'm keeping my eyes peeled
I'm fine with rules. They make it clear what's required, everyone singing to the same hymnsheet, and people can decide whether they want to enter or not, based on them. A competition without rules, or with unclear rules, is daft. So, hurray for rules!
But I don't like it when rules change in the middle of a competition. Now I don't know if they'll be going to change again. I guess this new rule was based on Jak's SISI rule, where you could skip one trick.... But that applied to everyone. Will the 7 of us who have got through so far be given a similar lifeline to the one you just offered to everyone else?
Sorry if I sound grumpy, and no offence to the other 15: I do indeed hope you'll all take the chance you've been offered. And I love the have-a-go attitude[nb]Parker Square[/nb] that everyone's displaying in this comp. I'll still carry on doing my best, and trying to get as far as I can, but it's hard enough trying to beat all the excellent players around here, without having to beat some of them twice! :) Hmmm.
Oh well, so it goes. Onwards....

I agree with you. Already the deadline shift felt a bit weird to me. Then the out-of-nowhere second chance came up. In the SISI comp, you had to film all the tricks anyway, in the end. You were just allowed to miss one deadline and then post both vids before the next. That being said, I am a bit unclear, if we need to film round 4 anyway. But I am not submitting round 5 unless I film round 4 as well. That wouldn't feel right. Might have a go tomorrow, plan to film tricks for the EKO tricklist, which we are hoping to make public soon! Driftiiiing awaaaaayyyyyyyyyy from the topic here... Anyway, I kind of have a feeling that Rob was disappointed in how many people got eliminated so early on into the comp, hence the change of rules.. But yeah, his comp, his rules, take 'em or leave 'em. I for one will take a shower now ;) happy clicking everyone! :)
Update, for those interested...
I spent about 45 minutes today on this, with minimal success. There's no way I'm going to be as cool as
@KenSan and rock it on my first try!
Thanks for all the advice
@DanieLambert - it's actually the earth turn that I find the hardest. It's usually too fast. Finding that sweet spot is a rare occurrence. I also have trouble throwing the earth turn too high, and when I try and kenflip it pulls the string tight and implodes into chaos.
Either way, I hit the pull-up about 5 times in total, and about 3 very, very shabby "whirlwinds" so there's still hope!
@KenSan @fiddletriks Accepted!
@The Void (+all others on the subject)
Admittedly, I didn't expect so many people to be out so early, and I thought this would make it a bit more interesting with a handful of comebacks in the mix. I will think about a bonus for the 7 soon (which I wasn't going to announce, but was intending)
Oh, and Void, Accepted too!
@fiddletriks and your mad whirley tech
Thanks
@John The whilwind earth turn was actually one of those tricks that was (and still is) very in fashion when I started playing kendama a couple of years ago! So Ive been grinding on it for most of that time.
As for executing it, like
@DanieLambert says accentuate your movements. Go low with the knees- your ken should be almost horizontel, but obviously not to the point of the tama falling off-then as you move up from the knees, the ken will start to straighten up and the momentum of when your at the peek will take the tama off the spike and almost start the earth turn naturally, without to much forced movment from your wrist.
This should keep the earth turn slow. Now just keep your eye on the tama and perform the whirlie in you peripheral vision trying to keep close enough to the tama not to yank it-then go down with the knees for the catch!
You will be supprised how much you can actually slow it down and still perform the trick!
Hope this helps. Good luck and see you in the next round!
I did it! Video to come later when I'm at home. Thanks for the amazing advice
@KenSan - I followed it pretty much exactly and got it in the combo after about 45 minutes. I get so much inspiration from everyone on here, you're all so helpful even when we're competing! :)
Ok, here we go. Bit grainy for some reason but you can see everything clearly enough.

@The Void It's only adding a reverse in to it, not thaaaat awkward...
Accepted! - lighting was fine, could see all the movements correctly, so all good!
@Dimensions Cheers. I meant my execution was awkward, not the trick in itself. It wasn't as bad as I first feared, but still took me a little while to get it. I guess last week's WW training sesh helped. :)
@Dimensions here ya go. :)

Hmmm. The first part is causing me a lot of trouble at the moment, mainly because my whirlies are quite slow. By the time I've caught the ken, the tama is rocketing towards the ground, and a higher lift usually results in a yanked string. I'm still confident I'll get it, but it might be close to the wire...
Go
@John !
My Wws aren't that strong, but they improved after I adopted Adam's "twiddle from the middle" approach: Fingers and thumbs all gripping above the slip grip, and a little bit below the sarado (for clearance). Give it a try, and see if it works for you.
Thanks Void, I'll give it a whirl.

I thought I landed it and this happened to me also haha got it in the end he heee

Happy days
@Dimensions 8)
@Dimensions ,yoo man I've been super swamped by college work and stress lately, totally agree missed the deadline on round 7, any chance I could snag round 7 today and rejoin??
@DanieLambert I'm glad to hear your enthusiasm over the contest, but unfortunately I'm going to have to say no as this hadn't been pre-warned to anyone else.
Concerning the round 5 re-entry thing I attempted, and if this option had been taken advantage of - (as I had said,) all those who had got that far would have been given an advantage too. But as this did not happen, the original rules will remain standing.
I'm sad to see you go, but keep clicking for us!

Sorry to see you go,
@DanieLambert ... and you too
@KenSan . It's a shame when anyone has to go out because of deadlines, but then that's just part of the comp. You're both great players. Next time...
Cool man
Best of luck
I think I'm getting the muscle memory for 3.5 turns! :)
Cheers
@The Void I appreciate having my skills recognised by yourself! And hopefully will see you at the BKO to improve upon my 1st kyu and maybe even my 3rd place at last years BKO 8)

Nice work! I've spent about an hour on this today. A long, difficult hour (apparently reverse build the lighthouses are not as easy as regular ones) and the few times I got to the j-sticks, they unsurprisingly got nowhere near to clicking (or maybe they did! It's all a roll of the dice). I would be highly surprised if I landed this, but looking forward to seeing your video for inspiration. :)
Both my knees and my camera are out of batteries for the day. Got some 4-Turn action going, one of which sniffed the rim. Try again tomorrow....
My ken is getting absolutely wrecked with this one.
Sorry :)
Sunny today, but breezy, which hasn't helped. Still...
http://juggling.tv/16370
Hope the framing won't get me failed... I think frame-by-frame playback reveals the quad....
@The VoidThere were 4
in frame rotations, which raises the question of if there was an extra when it was not. By looking at the upwards rotations it seems unlikely, so benefit of the doubt...

Phew, thanks! Have to admit, I didn't see the spike at all, it just went in.
Right, come on
@John !
Amazing
@The Void ! I knew it'd be a breeze for you, even in a.... breeze. That final spike was nerve racking!
I spent another hour on this today and honestly, really can't see me getting it but will keep on trying. My legs are well achey tonight so will have a crack tomorrow.
okay, i just did it. reviewed it and it was a quint j stick.
I'm done with this today. the 2 second waiting on the lighthouse is just killing the flow.
i'll be back.
@oesterzilla 5?! Oh no. Is that more, or less annoying than a triple? :o

i can do a triple on purpose but not a quad. just cant see it.
so 5 is more annoying to me.

hope you can see everything.
@oesterzilla 4 for certain! Seems like all that time spent payed off - that 5-turn previously must have been annoying though...
Accepted!
Nice one
@oesterzilla !
So, who's the slowcoach who we're all waiting for now then, eh?
Sorry chaps. You're all way better than me and I'm a little out of my depth, but trying!
I had almost no time today to practice, but when I did, I got a stroke of luck and actually managed to land the 4x jumping stick... and then proceeded to fluff by far the easiest part of the whole combo, back to lighthouse. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so I laughed.
Still doubt I'll get this one, but will keep going :)
@oesterzilla Yes!
@John Oh damn, gutting. That's why I took a big pause afterwards. Come on though, you've got it!
You can do it John!
Well, it's been a long week and I'm all out of time for any more practice for this round. I've spent about an hour each day working on it, and although I didn't manage to get all the way to the end, I came much closer than I thought I'd be able to. Thanks to
@Dimensions for letting me play, and best of luck to the 4 remaining players, it's going to be a close call this year.
Here's my best effort!
https://vimeo.com/210655340
Ahh no! So close!
The deadline still remains at 16:30 tomorrow in case you get any extra time to crack it, there is still hope!
@John Awwww! Bad luck, mate.
@Dimensions I did have a 15 minute window earlier for one last effort actually, and I did exactly the same thing as yesterday and fluffed the final spike. Guess it was never meant to be. :)
@The Void It's all good! I never expected to get as far as I did and quite proud of how far my playing has come because of Outlink. I really wish I could have participated in a few more from previous years, but really had to put kendama (and pretty much everything else) on the backburner for quite a long time during my time in Cambodia. This was great for me and am hoping there will be more challenges on here to keep me busy in the coming months. Good luck in the competition!
Unlucky John, but well done on getting so far! Hope to see you at BKO if your going

Lunars and axes are 2 of my favourite tricks - I love stalls in general, really. Candlesticks feel uncomfortable for me and are right at the bottom of my list, along with juggles and taps. So this is a very yin and yang trick for me. And you will absolutely land it soon Void, I have no doubt :)
Maybe, John. I've now got 3.5 of the 5 elements. I may be heading for my traditional 4th place. :)

Since I suffer the curse of cold mortality, I'm afraid it's inevitable. Today I caught the Candle grip, but missed the tama catch 3 times. Knackered! Probably won't get too much more play time before the deadline, but I'll see what I can do...

basically we gotta do the same that you did right?
i just did it but i forgot big cup spike and i did around japan in kengrip. ha ha ha :(
gonna try smash this one this afternoon. Been working on each section individually and feeling relatively ok with those. Now to string it all together...
@oesterzillaIll say that any big/little cup can be in any order, for the 1-turn LH I just found it easier to start with the little cup. But grip wise should be the same as mine

Right, I've not had a lot of time to spend on this one, and I'm off to BJC tomorrow, so I've probably finished with it. @paulsayer @oesterzilla Just under 24 hours left! Remember to upload your best attempt as it will end up being whoever gets furthest as the winner (if neither complete the whole thing)
i dont think i can land this trick in this year. double flip juggles are way too hard and those are 3 :D
i personally find that it would be cool to have a trick which anyone of us 2 can complete. not just struggle all the way down to them juggles and who gets the furthest attempt wins. but thats just my opinion, all up to you
Standing by my judgement; good luck!
This is my submission
@Dimensions.
To be honest, I was on the verge of giving up on the last round and completely knackered myself in the process of getting it. I spent the first day this new trick was set, trying the 2-turn lightning 2-turn light house for hours and wasn't getting it down. 2-turn juggles are completely new to me, so three to spike was never gonna happen in three days ;D Didn't have time/energy yesterday to practice and have just now managed to get this easier version - wanted to finish the comp on a make! plus it's time for bed soon..

As neither of you completed the full set combo, Outlink is now over. Here is my verdict:
@paulsayer, certainly a valiant attempt you put forward for us, but I did set a
lightning drop as the first trick of the combo, you did a spacewalk. 'Zilla did successfully complete parts 1 & 2 of the combo, therefore the winner is........
@oesterzilla!
Please PM me your address so I can get a prize off to you as soon as possible. Well done!
Thanks to all those who competed this year and a second congrats to Paul for getting the silver this year. I don't know about the rest of you, but I certainly enjoyed running Outlink.
And for all who want to know the full sentence:
