FAQ:
Q. Do I have to buy a ticket?
A. No, just turn up on the Sunday and pay for whichever divisions you wish to enter.
Q. Where shall I stay?
A. Check out where the Social and Competition days are being held (http://kendama.co.uk/bko2016.html), and try to find a hotel or Air B & B (http://airbnb.co.uk/) nearby. Bristol isn't too large a city, so as long as you're not way on the outskirts, you'll probably be within 40 minutes' walk.
Q. I've never been to a competition before. Is it okay just to watch?
A. Yes, certainly. But why not have a go at entering? Although the BKO is a "serious competition", we're a friendly crowd and everyone is encouraged to do their best. If you don't try, you'll never know if you like it or not. You might surprise yourself...
Q. Will you be doing gradings (http://kendama.co.uk/exam.html) at the weekend?
A. We will try to fit in some gradings first thing on Sunday. But we have time constraints to get everything done, so we can't promise. On Saturday, if the weather permits, we may have more time to do some gradings.
SATURDAY:
We will meet in Queen's Square, between 12:30 and 14:30. We'll then move to Millenium Square Landing/Millenium Square for a change of scenery. We may move on to College Green later on. In the evening, we'll go for a meal at a nearby Indian restaurant.[nb]If you were at the 2013 Bristol BKO social day, we can promise you... LESS WALKING! ;)[/nb]
UPDATE: The Omnium competition will begin at 13:30. Details of the competition will be revealed on the day.

Wow
@shalafi thats very reasonable. For me coming from Ramsgate Kent it will probably take me twice as long to travel and twice the price by car or train and similar, but a lot longer by coach.
Am hopeful of coming though!
I'll be there!
(Hopefully for both days, but not certain as of yet! I'll decide closer to the time)
Competition day venue announced: http://kendama.co.uk/bko2016.html (http://kendama.co.uk/bko2016.html)
We've been asked...
QuoteQuick question regarding bko. I had been jamming a yellow ozora i intended to use. However the sword is dyed a light green colour. Will this be disallowed?
...and may as well answer publicly. On http://kendama.co.uk/approved.html (http://kendama.co.uk/approved.html) , the disallowed modifications are:
QuoteDisallowed Modifications
Adding glue below the tip's slope
Altering the ball's (paint) surface in any way
Sharpening the spike
Re-building a bluntened spike with resin, or other substance
Adding any markings to the ken or ball
Removal of original sticker/seal
Mixing parts of different kendamas
Modifying the ken or dama in any way that alters the original design (other than through natural use)
Excessive wearing-in. A judge may disallow a kendama if it has too many nicks or notches, which may provide an advantage for balance tricks.
Stained kens are not specifically mentioned, but would appear to come under "adding any markings". However, judges are also allowed to use their discretion, so if a judge felt that a stained ken did not give any advantage, and also had not affected how the surface of the wood might play/feel, then she may be inclined to allow it. It would definitely be on a case-by-case basis though, so the kendama in question would have to be seen and approved by the judge.
Ok thanks. It doesnt seem to add anything in terms of playability on ken to tama contact. Just appearance i guess. Although it might just be a good excuse to get another jka dama ;) thanks again
I really hope to make this event and will probably have the family in tow (wife and two skids).
Whats the accommodation like?
Have checked premier inns and travelodge so far. Seeing as its a bank holiday weekend it could be pricey! Any cheap suggestions would be appreciated ;D
Air B&B is probably worth a look. Great to hear you're planning on coming.
Cheers
@The Void I will look into that one.
Ah ha its a B&B search engine.
No, airb&b is for private people only. There are no professional b&b there, only normal people that rent one room in their house.
It's cheaper than normal b&b, as most of the new 'cooperative economy' sites.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
@shalafi I see that now. Looks like quite a useful site. And there seems to be some very reasonable prices around Bristol. Out of curiosity I also checked Tokyo and prices there are even cheaper!!
@KenSan I was just making sure that you get the concept right. It is a more personal stay, some people like it better, some don't. Also, the quality of the experience varies a lot, some people are amazing hosts while others just want some extra money and don't care.
Looks like I'm coming!
Used the Airbnb and booked some accommodation near Redcatch park area. I shall be flying solo so no kensan jnr!
I shall see you there!

Don't let this be the last ever BKO. Put the date in your diary NOW, and COME TO THE BKO!
I've spoke to a few people about kendamas that are allowed to be used. @mreasyguy said most ozoras are 100% allowed for competition?
This will be my first BKO so I'm super excited haha!

Looking forwards to having you there.
The Intermediate list has been decided... but not filmed or announced yet. Stay tuned!
Hey, just noticed that were keeping the joker in the mix. Nice!
Yes.
Beginners list is the same as last year. Intermediate list is out now. See http://kendama.co.uk/bko2016.html (http://kendama.co.uk/bko2016.html)
Advanced list coming... tomorrow?
Wot, no weird music? That's surely why you didn't land the JS first time!
Quote from: the milky oolong on 28 January, 2016, 15:55:05Wot, no weird music? That's surely why you didn't land the JS first time!
After all the audio editing I did on last year's Adv vid, and getting a total of zero responses about it - good or bad - I frankly CBA.
frubble wricket crutter baikwhorkh And it was a string tweak. : :-\
Nice!
I like the change in the intermediate, allows for some very quick runs if practiced enough and some good clutch points. 8)
Advanced trick list and video are out!
Please...
- Read ALL the rules and details on http://kendama.co.uk/bko2016.html (http://kendama.co.uk/bko2016.html)
- Read all the clarifications in the video.
- Use the Slomo button in JTV's Flash player, or use JTV's Download buttons, to play the video on your computer at slow/frame-by-frame speed if needed
... before asking questions on tricks.
If in doubt, tricks must be performed as in the video.
You have 3 months. Use them wisely! :D
Interesting trick selection. Thinker Village particularly keeps the weirdness of the list up :)
A few tricks in there that I want to try or to get better at, independently of me going to the BKO or not.
I liked the music thou :-P
Just watched the trick lists and there are a fair few I've never seen before, so I shall have fun trying them out over the next few months!
Shalafi's Hanging 1 turn aero has me stumbling at the moment from his IKO trick list. I've been close but not close enough!
Liking the list! Looks fun!
A nice mix once again!
Some of those go against all kinds of "normal" mind, like flat juggle?! that just made my hand confused relearning a juggle, same goes for the bird no spin lighthouse (bird fast-hand lighthouse?)Love it!
Well time to drill these tricks in!

My hands were a bit reluctant to play along too! :) (Although I do "flats" with juggling clubs. Feels a bit different with a ken....)
Have fun with 'em!
@BKA regarding the competition levels beginner, intermediate and advanced. You obviously have guide lines for what level of player should enter each division. But quite a few players will have no grading so do you ever say to any participants that you think they should enter a certain (next division up) division judging by what you've seen them do?
If asked, yes. Or we might give a suggested level. But it is up to the player. If a player is quite nervous, and it's their first competition, then perhaps they might want to go for beginner, even if their skill level suggests they might go higher. That is allowed, but... let your conscience be your guide. And in any case, there is the rule that if you win, you must move up a division, so you can't be a "repeat offender". Also, even if you have no official grading, you can always self-certify to give yourself an idea of your level.
Okay, cool.
Time to do some shout-out reminder/encouragements!

Happy Friday.
That is a very generous prize
@BKA
Yes,
@KenSan . This one is courtesy of Mr Yano of the J.K.A. We've been trying to give it away for a while now, but someone will definitely win it at the B.K.O. this year!
The raffle is a great idea. I hope it helps bringing more people to the BKO
Update! Saturday details.
See (updated) first post (http://kendama.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,2663.msg23029.html#msg23029) in the thread.
Definitely gonna be there! I think i can speak for Will as well and say he'll be down. Also my girlfriend will be coming too and entering beginner, as well as taking photos! Looking forward to that Mugen raffle as well!
Everyone undecided, it's worth it just for a trip to our fair city! Plus there'll be kendamas!
Looking forward to seeing everyone again!
I feel that was too many exclamation marks...... :D
I'll be there for sure! I'm actually going to practice some freestyle this time too!
Great to hear that from both of you,
@Rich and
@SamB !
UPDATE :
First prize in Advanced: A return flight from Europe to attend Kendama Festa in Japan (July 16/17). Courtesy of JKA.

That's a freaking good prize!
:o Cool! Some nice prizes on offer that's for sure.
That is indeed an awesome prize!
Is there anyone i could stay with that weekend?
the tricks look cool and would love to go to england again.
i'm thinking of booking a flight,
but it would be cheaper and MORE Fun if i could stay at some in stead of sleeping in a B&B or hostel by my self.
Or is the a Kendama-hostel-take-over allready planned >??
Awesome, not that I ever have the chance the get the prize. The JKA is really reaching out lately.

I think there's a slight difference between optimistic and unrealistic ;)
I know how much time I have to practice and I know the skills of potential competitors. And if you add the two, there's simply no way to become BKO winner (advanced) this year.

Quote from: Dimensions on 06 March, 2016, 17:12:55I assume this has nothing to do with cycling.
Given that the wikipedia says that it is "a multiple race event" that is used on cycling, my guess is that it is a similar format competition but with kendama when people compete in different modes and then gets points for each individual one.
i.e. Games of Ken, Dan Jam, KnockOut, SpinOff, etc... and then combine the results.

Just booked my hotel! Been hesitant to say I'm a definite to come but now it's official! I should probably look at the trick-list now then...
@Jak I'd noticed you'd not commented, so was mentally writing you off as a no-show. Great that you'll be there! :)
Just over a week to go!
Here's a throwback pic....
So, I've decided I'll just be making it for the Sunday - 'cause of exams and all.
So see you all there!
Can I request filming of the Omnium? I'm rather intrigued about it.

Although I did drop off the radar for a bit... still, I don't forget!
See you guys there, can't wait. Although work has meant I haven't practised enough. >_<
Sorry Rich, but... Good to hear. And all the hype is good hype. Meanwhile, you've got a week to practice!
I am actually in Bristol on Saturday night so could potentially attend. I've not done kendama for a long long time though. What division would I be eligible for? Better get practising...loads of tricks I've never tried!
Hi
@Toby Cool that you might make it. I reckon even a rusty you would be too good for Beginner, so Intermediate probably beckons, unless you feel like plunging straight for Advanced. Plus 7ToSpike if you fancied it. Hope to see you on Sunday!

Sunday. Bit of a walk to cashpoints. So BRING CASH WITH YOU.
Saturday. Could be showery. Bring a hat and coat! We'll dodge into coffee shops if needed.
I'll be there on saturday!
Can anyone tell me roughly what the turnout will be like, going by previous events? just curious..
Also will there be any merch for sale anywhere?
@JakeHookins Awesome!
Turnout guesses:
Saturday: 8-12
Sunday: 20-35
Merch on Sunday.
Me,
@donald grant &
@s070s will all be there on Saturday also.

Didn't perform well on stage at all. It's something I've never done (playing Kendama on stage) and it was my first bko also haha still had a great time!
Thanks Void and everyone involved for another great bko. Just got back home. Happy to get 2nd in the dam jam, shame I'm also pretty rubbish on stage, getting knocked out on an earth turn was pretty gutting but a big well done to Rob! Wish I could've stayed longer. Catch you all soon hopefully.

Thanks
@donald grant for the grading. Damn those moshi kami 316 on the second go but only 50 counted DOH!
Hope we see a BKO next year!
In off to bed. Kensan out!
Well done, kensan, you played a fine game! Fun weekend, and it's always good to be able to put a few more forum names to faces. Cheers to the void for organizing it all. More playtime this afternoon and evening, then heading back North tomorrow.
Fantastic afternoon! Came away empty handed (after a disasterous attempt at intermediate comp!) but met new people & learnt new tricks from watching others.
Massive thanks to Void & all those who helped run it. Also big thanks to all the generous sponsors - a great event.
Looking forward to seeing some photos from Japan Rob - get practicing the trick list...
This weekend passed so quickly I didn't realise it was the BKO! Damn, I could have followed the live broadcasts...
Looks like again a great event! Congrats to Rob and the other winners!
Hope to make it back out there again one day.

Great photos- thanks for sharing. Thanks again to Void & team and all the generous sponsors.
Nice set of photos. And thank you again to all those involved!
Lovely meeting you all (again).
Thanks to the Void for the organising the event and cheers to everyone for all the tips!
Such an amazing time guys. Please please let's do it again next year. Much love to those that supported ARK in particular. Happy to sponsor a little bit this year as well. Things are moving forward. Today I got sponsored by CWCS unexpectedly. Still in shock of it all really.

If anyone's making a video... this still could go in, if you like.
A few BKO photos. Sorry I didn't take many as I was too busy playing 'dama without the kids or my wife hounding me :)
