Title: DOWNSPIKE
Post by: fiddletriks on 12 October, 2016, 00:11:40
So Colin Sanders and 'Cheech' have basically made a forum for kendama. Completely overlooking this one.

[Mod edit]

Their intro video saying that kendama "needs something like this."

If this isn't what he's described then I don't know what is!

Its also not as if half those people haven't been on this forum already.  :-\

Maybe we aren't cool enough  ::)

My thoughts exactly when I saw the announcement.

I haven't had time to check out out to see if there's something else (it looks more like a web portal).

But overall, yes, it seems we aren't cool enough :-(

Scratch that it's a forum with many topics that are the same as the ones we have. I'm astonished.

Who knows how long this will last, maybe forever. I can't help but feel a bit down after looking at it.
But I have to say it, they already seem to have a big surge of popularity. It seems a little messy but I can't deny how many people are already on it. I really don't know what to think about this.

I understand that 'down' feeling completely. Your right in it being messy in places and a lot of the cool guys are on it. It's just ridiculous that they don't mention this forum in the slightest. Unsure if it's worth while attempting to email and query or post on downspike stating this forum has been around a lot longer. Easier to use. Doesn't look anything like Social media which is one of the main points.

Or just to let it run its course and turn into the FB kendama group.

If you like & appreciate The Kendama Forum, use The Kendama Forum. Post in it, repost links to it, talk about it, and don't be just a lurker. Thanks for all your support here, over the last 5+ years, and the next 5+ years, and beyond.

I think the key part is having all "the cool kids" that drag newcomers to it.

I made an account to check out our, but I'm likely to keep using this one instead.

lol. colin, alex smith, matt sweets and a bunch more already have accounts here on this forum..

however, without a proper PHP web forum (that this site has) their site will not show up in as many web search results. and the fact that this forum has been around for 7 years will already put google web searches above anything else, for a while.

but, i guess the more kendama is being talked about, the better. just seems strange. this is the official page/forum for the BKA, afterall.

Cheech here.  AMA.

Just wanted to post on here and say that we didn't overlook this forum.  I've been aware about it for probably 5-6 years.
Also, we are NOT trying to replace it.  Read on...

I doubt many of you guys are skiers, but in freeskiing there are two distinct but equally popular forums- Newschoolers and Teton Gravity Research.   The TGR forum is for more of the backcountry and big mountain guys, and skews a little older.  The Newschoolers forum is more focused on park skiing and rails, and skews younger.  It's also more video centric.

I think a parallel can be drawn here. You guys have a wealth of information and are well vetted by all the search engine bots, as mentioned.  It's a great place.  But it also has its shortcomings. In talking with some influencers in Europe I realized that the BKA and the euro scene in general is moving to a more structured, competition-based form of kendama.  I think that's great, but we want to expand the niché that Colin helped create in the first place- the creative, video-centric, story-telling version of kendama.  Ultimately we will be a video site.  We will have our own CDNs and video player, and an awards show every year.  Apps for iOS and android.   A lot of the features we are working on aren't out yet, but we are excited for them.

Of course there will be some overlap.
But keep in mind-  "a rising tide lifts all ships".  The more people can find out about this game the better off it will become.
We can all agree on that.

TL;DR-  I started a company to fill a niché that Colin saw in Kendama.  If it works we're all better off.

Much respect. Thanks for giving us more of an understanding of the difference, thanks for the statement.

I think a few of us, including myself, jumped to the conclusion of "oh it's just another forum" without giving it much thought.

Apologies for the instant backlash and comments on the forum in regards to this and we all agree on the 'the more the better' point of all of this.

Thanks for the clarification. It's good to read the thought process of making dowspike.

On total fairness, activity on this forum has been steadily decreasing and in general I find new players reluctant to use a forum nowadays, despite its many virtues when compared to FKC (which has other virtues of its own)

In a way agree on "the more the better" buy also we may be splitting participation, not sure, I guess only time will tell.
