Kendama Size

As a general rule, bigger kendamas are easier to use. Because of this, in the 1970s, the JKA established a standard competition size for kendama, so that everyone could play on an equal basis in competitions and gradings. For shorthand, this is now known as "competition size".

Ken height 160mm
Tama diameter 60mm
Sarado width 70mm
Big Cup (inner) diameter 40mm
Small Cup (inner) diameter 36mm
Base Cup (inner) diameter 34mm

In recent years, some manufacturers have started making slightly larger kendamas, as these are easier to play, and look nice on video. These are generally known as "oversize kendamas". Some competitions have decided to allow oversize kendamas along with competition sized kendamas.
